The unspoken reason he lost was because Republicans were voting against him. They were voting against Trump Lite as loony as he was.
Since then we've had Trump 3.0. Jan 6th and now this foolishness. And more foolishness to come. Trump Org is under investigation. How many Republicans will be voting against him this time? The behind closed doors stance is he needs to go away.

Saw some discussion stating if he's charged and there's a federal trial, it could likely be in Florida instead of DC. If that's the case he will not be indicted.
