I think the problem right now is qb scarcity. We had one year where a lot of starters were hurt and fans/watchers complained about bad qb play and atrocious backups.

Coupled with the eternal fear of letting go of a mediocre but at least known quantity qb and potentially having to rebuild a team, and it's very hard for GMs to just say "nah you aint worth the going rate for qbs wed rather take a chance on a rookie"
Elite QBs are always gonna be scarce, but I definitely attribute the largest percentage to that fear of the unknown or just doing what other teams don’t do. They’d rather fail doing what anybody else would do than fail trying something different, because the owner is scared of not selling out tix, which carries through to the GM being scared of losing their job. The league proves that time and time again.

Kurt Cousins robbed Minnesota for how many yrs, for them to finally let him walk after he was old and injured, and look what a cheap “bust” in Darnold is getting them with a balanced roster. That’s a solid middle ground that should prove you don’t have to have a top guy if you build a solid roster, uninhibited by an unnecessary contract

Darnold is still within those 50-ish qbs who still will be around the league just off arm talent. His arm talent was never a question...just like with Trevor. Its being a turnover machine and not making good decisions.

The other thing is no longer are you able to get a good rookie qb in later rounds. Like you have to pick a qb in first or second at most. I think that also plays a part.

I was a big proponent of never paying non-elite qbs but I think we reached a point where it's actually pretty difficult. Especially since there's really like only three elite qbs or something like that.

Also with the Darnold thing, the Vikings drafted JJ high in the first round. It's not like Vikings made a conscious decision to get Darnold as their long term starter. He was a backup to them and a bridge qb for a few starts.

I’m not against paying them either when they have actual leverage, I just find it a fool’s errand to continuously make them the highest paid when it’s no question they’ll never make that kinda impact. If it leads to winning it speaks for itself, but somehow it never does outside of the nikka actually competing for the GOAT. And I don’t even mean the SB, I mean at least being a threat for one. You go down the current list rn and it’s bad look after bad look

You're ignoring that Minnesota had a terrible defense for all of Cousins's tenure and admitting that he had to be 36 and injured to lose enough value.

Exactly, they built a roster up and pivoted when they thought giving out the QB contract the starter was looking for was a bad decision. I wasn’t saying they chose Darnold. They chose the rest of the team over Cousins and have one of the better defenses and offensive weapons.

I always wondered if Viking fans looked at the Cousins signing as a mistake in hindsight…The narrative was always on his side after the fukkery with the skins so it was tough to see what the true feelings where..But I remember thinking back then it was a odd move..They just needed to ride the process after that season but they chose to rush it and never had the same success…Luckily they are well run enough to bounce back in a short time to the current..
