That's been my main problem with this series (other than Shia screaming every 5 seconds). Other than Optimus and Bumblebee, I can never tell who is who.

For me the Transformers movies are 2-1 at the moment.
Transformers 1 - Good
Transformers 2 - A complete and utter abomination.
Transformers 3 - A helluva lot better than the second, but not as good as the first.
So there's my two cents.

Because the leader of the bad guys (Megatron) turns into a gun. How was he going to get around when some of his troops turn into planes. So they had to make him and Soundwave and the other none plane Decepticons fly.
As for the trailer:
Grimlock has a robot mode but there is a nasty rumor he won't transform in the movie. Won't be the first time as Shockwave never transformed in Dark of The Moon. But there is a leak image of his robot mode on a t shirt. Also the two headed bird you see is another dinobot named Strafe/Paulie. We got leaked pics of his toy with a robot mode.
Galvatron is confirmed but he was not shown. The guy with the gun face we believe is Lockdown who is a bounty hunter brought in from the Animated show and toy line.
The guy who cuts the car in half, no ID yet but his face was used on the promo images for the movie poster "he is watching"
Optimus: if you watch closey you see 2 Optimus primes. There is a rusty Optimus using his body from the trilogy and the newly designed Prime. Same guy. Probably get upgraded.
The CGI is totally unfinished. In fact throughout the live action film series, they wait till the last min (hours before premier) to finish the CGI

Doesn't explain why the Autobots were able to fly in the pilot and were grounded for the rest of the series...

Running change in the show. If the Autobots could fly, they wouldn't transform. Thus they grounded them and pretended they never flew.
