Still thinking about this film....guess that says something.

One thing I can say is that I wanted more insight into Dodd's character/family. I wanted a showdown of sorts between him and his son...it was odd that he said "he's making this up as he goes", then disappears for a bit, but is still around in England...

...and the scene at the book release party was telling, but I wanted more about the cracks in 'The Cause' and how he was dealing with them. I know that Quell was the focus of the story, but I wanted more Dodd too.

Sidenote: I thought the score was both oddly unique and quite excellent

i went and saw it last week and there were nothing but old people out in the audience...in the bathroom scene with amy adams and PSH...i looked to my left and there was this old ass white dude with the face...had me like and i didn't even finish the rest of my popcorn

Saw this last night. The pacing was slow but I was glued the entire time. JP was great, he definitely had me sold as a fukking lost ass drunk mess of a man/soldier.

Yo...I'm still having this argument with my friends that went to go see this with me...during the scene when she was telling him what color are her eyes, did her eyes really change color? Was I that baked???

There were definitely a lot of allusions to Scientology and L Ron Hubbard in this. It was'nt exactly like it but I did a paper on it for my Religion in America class in undergrad and there are a lot of similarities

just saw this two nights ago and I really enjoyed the performances of JP and PSH but like others were saying it started fizzling out towards the end. Not sure how much of Joaquin's stuff was "acting" as he's always struck me as slightly off and a tad crazy, this role helped accentuate his real life tendencies.

Can someone explain the scene in Philly where PSH sings the song to the room and all the women gradually start losing their clothes? Was that just Joaquin's "animal side" as PSH describes it, running wild?

I saw it last night, and after thinking about much of last night and this morning, that's all I got too: interesting.

I liked it a lot (not as much as There Will Be Blood or Boogie Nights tho). It'll probably be a top contender for Best Picture, and Phoenix will probably win Best Actor. But the movie is so dense, both in dialogue and structure, that it's tough articulating complete thoughts about it. I'm fine with that, although I'm sure I'll be in the minority. This is the kind of movie that many people will be posting threads come Oscar time talking about how overrated it is and saying it shouldn't even be nominated and yada yada yada.

I'll probably see it again before the year is up. The ending really had me miffed, but two scenes I loved were..

the no-blinking interrogation scene with Phoenix and Hoffman, and the jail scene. Phoenix is incredible in the latter scene.

yeah, the second scene you mentioned will at least give Phoenix an Oscar nomination. That was brilliant acting.


I think interesting is the right word, and I agree with everything you said except "being fine about it." I really didnt like that. It was pretty dense and vague.

It was brilliantly acted, but I feel like they writing wasted some great performances.

and yeah, the scene in that bathroom was about as real as it gets. Altho I think Amy Adams had some "jizz" on her hand.

In fact thats another thing that was not fleshed out all the way since she suggested that PSH was cheating and it was ok.
