haha i know i wanted to go into detail but i wanted to wait until some more people have watched it. i hate it when people talk about movies early on cause they always end up spoiling the story for at least someone

i can see why people would say its based on scientology but honestly, its a reach. its not as thin like that. its actually character driven movie with all kinds of complex layers.
I saw it last night, and after thinking about much of last night and this morning, that's all I got too: interesting.
I liked it a lot (not as much as There Will Be Blood or Boogie Nights tho). It'll probably be a top contender for Best Picture, and Phoenix will probably win Best Actor. But the movie is so dense, both in dialogue and structure, that it's tough articulating complete thoughts about it. I'm fine with that, although I'm sure I'll be in the minority. This is the kind of movie that many people will be posting threads come Oscar time talking about how overrated it is and saying it shouldn't even be nominated and yada yada yada.
I'll probably see it again before the year is up. The ending really had me miffed, but two scenes I loved were..
the no-blinking interrogation scene with Phoenix and Hoffman, and the jail scene. Phoenix is incredible in the latter scene.
I should warn y'all. This movie isn't really about Scientology or even cults in general. It's just a framework for the real story, which is the relationship between the psychotic Phoenix and the cult leader Hoffman.
If you go in expecting Scientology to get "exposed" you're gonna come out disappointed, I guarantee it.
Saw this last night and was not impressed. The actors gave good performances and there were some moments but its incoherent and boring. Maybe PTA heads dig it but those moments where he slows the pace to a crawl put me to sleep.

I felt like a couple scenes were awkward and seemed to have little bearing on the rest of the film/story. Not entirely sure what to make of it though...
I definitely enjoyed it...but definitely feel like it's behind several of PTA's other films. Especially There Will Be Blood and Boogie Nights...which are two of the best films made in the last 20 years.
It's a lot like Magnolia in that so much of it was so great and parts of it were more like
i went and saw it last week and there were nothing but old people out in the audience...in the bathroom scene with amy adams and PSH...i looked to my left and there was this old ass white dude with the face...had me like and i didn't even finish the rest of my popcorn
