Had to look at the roster on the Niner App….. damn I really don’t know our team like that cuz starting LDE is Clelin Ferrell and I don’t even know who that is:mjlol:

I don’t think outside of today that name has ever been mentioned in our threads:russ:

He's the dude we got from Oakland. They say LDE but it's really been Jackson/Ferrell. It would've been Gregory if we didn't get a guy at the deadline. Now I fully expect the rotation to be Bosa, Young, Gregory, Ferrell.

The 49ers' biggest problem isn't Steve Wilks -- their problems run much deeper than their defensive coordinator. But they still need to fire him right now.

Frankly, they never should have hired him. More specifically, Kyle Shanahan never should have hired him. Because Shanahan didn't let Wilks run Wilks' defense. Instead, Shanahan forced Wilks to run Shanahan's Wide 9 defense, which Wilks never has run before. He's learning it and coaching it at the same time. No wonder he's struggling.

:unimpressed:

That makes no sense whatsoever. I mean it's plausible but I haven't watched his old defenses to say for sure. Even if that's the case, it doesn't explain the lack of productivity from the D-line and why the corners, especially the slot look so bad. A wide 9 is a pretty common defense to run so not sure why anyone would say he can't do it.

We mentioned Wilks in the booth last week now it seems like everyone is running with it.

Written by Grant Cohn FYI

Yeah, I think people saying fire Wilks are jumping the gun. Cohn is awful, like how do you report on a sport you know nothing about? If anything I'd say Wipks has a proven track record, compromise, have him come down from the booth in return let him run his defense if that's not the defense he wants to run. Or let him install his defense over the bye and let him stay, I don't care, just make a change.

You got me over here trying to fight back a dissertation right now about him. Now I gotta spend the next half of the season watching this man run directly into the chest of offensive lineman.
I remember me and you having a disagreement on dude and you were right :manny: so yeah

Tell me what you've seen breh. :dead: I haven't really paid much attention to him for real. I have no opinion of him overall but I don't think it's a bad pickup.

For what it's worth his hands have gotten better since Ohio State, still bad, but better than they were. If we did this for run stoutness I get it because he's strong and tries hard, but if they did this to generate pressure? I'd be much happier if they traded for Hunter from the Vikings

Wilks will need to start calling stunts to force our defensive lineman to get lateral and attack a quarter shoulder. He's been too trusting with them being able to beat lineman on their own and the FO just gave him an end who's ability to rush is pretty overrated......if that report where Kyle forced Wilks to run a wide 9 is true I hope this bye will be to allow him to re-tool it to generate more 4 man pressure without blitzing. The actual answer is moving Bosa inside for the year, but I don't think they'll do it. He'd match up better against a guard the way he's playing right now and his height could cause a problem across the middle for QBs trying to throw over him.

When he was at Ohio State he had some of the worst hands I've ever seen on a defensive lineman. If he couldn't beat someone immediately off the first step or two he was caught. He could do that against the Indiana's of the world, but the first time I noticed it was when I watched him play a game against Michigan who has some lineman who know how to pass set.....and after that it was a tackle on Wisconsin that treated him the same way Michigan did. They would just get in his way and he'd just drive his feet while staying engaged.....and they had a bowl game after that where I saw the same thing and it sealed it for me. He only knows how to play big and strong.

An NFL level lineman ain't gonna have an issue with someone just relying on the first step and being strong unless it's Von or Thibodeaux level with the step or Aaron Donald level with the strength.

I mean... what can be said about the trade. Chase Young is showing promise again. If we lose him next year we get a 3rd rounder back. It's a FREE rental. :whew:

Lynch been doing good with these trades.... better than he has with the draft.

I kinda agree. Minny and Burrow diced this D up with fast passes that pass rush cannot ever get to physically speaking. Cousins in general would just identify one on ones and just loft it to Addison

I disagree with that. Cousins in particular had ALL DAY to throw. The corners aren't good but if we can generate that pass rush we can start to piece this back together. Ward need to fukking play better too.

The thing about the NFL also..... not many teams have Cousins and Burrow. PJ Walker types obviously weren't doing shyt against us.

Ahh ok, that says a lot to be honest. I'm gonna take a look at him and see. Hopefully Kocurek can get him right. Do you see the same this year with him overall or is his bag deeper?

He's good for secondary pressure. He's never going to be the first one to the QB, but he might be second and he will be third because he tries hard. If they can get him to play lower throughout the rest of the season it'll probably be a W trade because new scenery helps and we only gave up a 3rd round comp pick.

This may sound nuts, but I have higher hopes for Gregory impacting the pass rush. He reminds me of Aldon Smith in good and bad ways.

Yeah I see that comparison I thought the same thing. They have basically the exact same build, plus he was essentially Smith's replacement in Dallas once he came back from suspension and they let Smith leave.
