People get state tax breaks for driving these hybrid cars. Environmentally friendly parking lots have special parking spaces (close to the building) for 1. the handicapped & 2. The hybrid/electric cars.

Prius problems I've seen in the news & experienced in friends' cars:
--They're so quiet that little kids playing loudly in the street run into the cars on foot/on bikes cuz they don't hear the Prius approach.
--Prius parts & repair are costly. Many mechanics aren't qualified to repair them.
--Prius acceleration on the highway is not fast. It's terrifying to see an 18 wheeler coming up fast, and yet your car won't hit 75mph until 45min after you floor the gas pedal. Good luck. u_u I saw many a Prius in MA, but not so many in TX.
--The Prius rides LOW. It's a car on a Flintstone frame. When a light drizzle floods the bayous of Houston, the Prius hydroplanes in puddles & across flooded lanes, AND THEN the electronic engine shorts out, AND THEN the computer shuts down, AND THEN the driver is trapped in the LOCKED car as it takes on water. Those TX 18 wheelers, SUVs, and flatbed trucks might decelerate as they rumble past. They might NOT. Power locks with no power? Good luck. u_u I saw many a Prius in MA, but not so many in TX.
