This season of Top Boys was not as gritty as the first two

“gritty” is the perfect word...I’m watching the original S1E1 and it’s not as polished as the new season but there is a rawness that it seems to capture...I can’t speak on shyt in the UK...I spent all of one day in brixton in '95 and that’s about it...but it seems to be authentic tho

I forgot how gully sully is...dude don’t play one bit lmao

the ranell storyline already seems to be a drag but I don’t remember anything about it so maybe it picks up

it’s odd that I literally don’t remember anything about this series except for the S2 finale...maybe bcuz of how short the seasons were...cuz there are older shows I remember a lot of details about but I’m drawing a blank on this series

a pleasant surprise was the chic who was w/ dude when the “food” got stolen...I’m thinking she has such a beautiful smile and bright eyes...and I couldn’t help but think how cute she is when I’d see her in a scene...then I realized it’s fukking letitia wright...that fukking smile of hers :wow:

Someone fill me in so my Netflix say season 1 but I guess its the current season I watched topboy summerhouse which season was that and which season am I watching now. I’m on ep 6 where sully got shot at the cemetery

top boy: summerhouse is the OG series...they renamed it...used to be just “top boy”...the continuing series is now called “top boy” and this is the first season (even tho it’s technically season one...for all “intensive purposes” it “minus whale” be season 3...but w/ such a huge gap between seasons it was right for them to sort of “refresh” things to accommodate new and old audiences) hope that wasn’t too muddled

FYI also if you like the old joints you’ll definitely like the new season...the pacing is vastly different tho imo...as short as the original season 1 is (4 eps) it’s still somewhat of a slow burn...the new season (10 eps) moved very fast for me

I’m posting too much in here but the summerhouse mini series is worth watching for sully alone...dushane is basically the same selfish gangster w/ a “conscience”...dris is still a doja lol...gem is still a “meh” minor side character but sully is the one character who has shown some progression come the new series...dude was straight fukking buggin in these early episodes tho

*edit*

ranell’s mother was a dope character too...I’m curious why his character wasn’t incorporated in this new season

did some poking around...I’m not fully buying it but interesting take tho...

Top Boy: What happened to Ra'Nell? Is he actually Modie? 3 major clues revealed

*double edit*

ranell = modie “theory” pretty much dispelled...

Just finished this was proper. On all fronts from writing to acting to cinematography, this season was great. I've been p disappointed in shows recently and Top Boy makes for it.

I'm kicking myself though because I know who Dave is and I didn't recognize him as Modie. And the same thing for Little Sims and I didn't know she was Shelley :mjlol:

I think one aspect of the show that was briefly mentioned by posters but not reflected on enough was how brilliantly gentrification is shown throughout the series. It almost exists as a background character of sorts. You can go all the way back to Ra’nells mom working at the hair salon. You have the investors walking in the shop pointing around and saying when the building is torn down where all the new structures will be. Then you get another scene where the hair salon owner is talking about the landlord doubling the rent and how unfair it is. Gem’s dad and the hair salon owner are eventually forced to close up their shops because of the high rent. You also had Dushanes lawyer trying to put him onto a real estate investor looking for liquid cash, since banks were tight with credit. She literally told him “what if I could introduce you to somebody who knew where the next big thing was? Who knew where the next slum would be a high rise”. She told him his life as a drug dealer would be short lived and he would be able to quadruple his money by investing in real estate. Fast forward to the new season and you have Dushane broke as shyt, buying coffee in a gentrified area, which I believe is the same area the investors were looking at and the same area the lawyer wanted him to invest in.

Such a weird dichotomy to me, since both Dushane and the investors are destroyers of communities. One through gentrification and the other through drugs. The people who are most affected by this destruction are the shop owners and regular people. They both destroy the fabric of communities.
While I ain't TOO find of Top Boy/The Wire comparisons, this is one of the Wire elements Top Boy does very well.

There's true narrative development, and they go the extra step in showing you how society's changes affect everyday people. Ats and his mom being the most convenient example
