museum had no black people walking around.

was too lazy to put the pics on here, but there is so much interesting shyt there.

What's going on? I get it that the science center of MI wouldn't be the most exciting place for a kid on SAT, but fukk what kids want to do - they should just follow the parents.

There were asian couples on top of asian couples. A few white couples. 1 white lady w pasty kids n they were speaking some other language and all looked so white that u could see veins in their head..

middle eastern families...

1 other black parent and she had a kid n stroller, was pregnant, and had a kid walking w her.. lol. me n her both weren't part of any couple :patrice:

The Museum has so many activities and exhibits - they make it fun as hell for kids.

IT's in the middle of the city w the largest black population by far - so where are the black kids at?
And what could we do about this as the people who invented science, math, and technology?

The shyt is elementary... broken down with interactive activities that are fun for kids. The shyt that's complicated, like electricity ... have random hyper white people explaining them at certain times - u pay for the tickets to go to those. basically kids run around playing - but learning about shyt.

so the parents don't need to understand.

It's literally in the middle of the city..... next to the African Museum (another issue is y isn't that shyt pack daily -it has history, slave ships, modern shyt, etc)

I bet if neil tyson came and spoke nobody would know or care... black guys in science need to do something to spark interest.

That's a shame because those museums are fun. It's the same thing with libraries. For some reason our community doesn't get behind reading and literature as much as other groups.

You can say the same about most parents in general. America as a whole is lagging in math and science, it's not just a black problem.

Agreed. I think a big problem is children thinking "I'm just not a math person". Nah b, thats a bad attitude to take because you're essentially giving up on learning it. I believe children have the ability to learn anything (minus folks with learning disabilities, obviously).

Again, if the families don't give a fukk about science, why would the kids. The paucity of blacks at these museums is a reflection of the the general apathy towards science and education that exists in the community. My kids are only 3 and 1 and I take them frequently to the children's museum, the zoo, as well as other kid friendly, educational destinations. You have to get kids interested in learning young if you expect them to be intellectually curious when they get older.

i think it's a class and culture issue that plays itself out in certain proportions within each demographic. i will wager that the types of people who frequent science museums, regardless of skin color tend to be:

a) secular or capable of strictly compartmentalizing their faith so that it never interferes with their pursuit of knowledge.
b) middle class
c) a household with two parents
d) a household where both parents at least graduated from high school

black and brown folks are seriously lacking in those criteria, unfortunately, but not unsurprisingly considering our history here. the whites and asians who have life outcomes similar to blacks also dont frequent the science museum any more than we do, but since the portion of whites and asians with similar socio-economic attributes to blacks is smaller, there is enough intraracial social stratification to allow for more whites and asians to be into this stuff. basically, black people are heavily underclass while whites and asians are heavily middle class or higher. there are even more complicated economic and cultural breakdowns but that would be splitting hairs, in my opinion. to put it simply, blue collar people dont do stuff like that as often as white collar people.

you dont need to possess all a-d from that list, but the more attributes from that list, the more likely you are to be doing something academic outside of class. i would also wager that if you have b, c, and d but not a, you would be more likely to visit a "creationist" museum where you can see cavemen riding dinosaurs
