Kendrick grinded and wasn't a plant but he def was fake independent around 2011 or so. And had backing before that.
What backing? Tech n9ne introduced kendrick to Dr Dre in 2009, before that it was just TDE.

So like Kendrick Lamar from 2005 to 2010 :ohhh:

I fukk with Ja but he did kinda come outta nowhere I don't remember any real build up or buzz on a organic street level

he really didn't. no one was really checking for him, so i get what you're saying. he was definitely overshadowed by his peers initially (mic geronimo, hov, x), and i dont think he makes it to def jam without irv. but irv helped bring jay and x to def jam too.

That's hilarious. If anyone was a plant, it's his boss 50 Cent. The guy has been working with law enforcement for decades. His career was over until miraculously he came up again "organically" through those BS mixtapes.

:gucci:

so now arguably the greatest/most impactful mixtape run of all-time is some plant shyt... because 50 is unlikeable?

lol. wtf are we really doing.

Most the biggest 90s rappers would be called industry plants by today's standards. The whole plant thing is corny.

Yeah you had regional independent labels like No Limit, Cash Money, Rap-A-Lot, Sick Wid It that built a big grass roots following they got their national distribution deals.

But by today's logic anyone who debut album was on a major label and got a push was a plant. That's just how it was. Labels actually invested in and developed the artists. Nobody was crying about Snoop being an industry plant in 1993 :mjlol:

Was 50 signed and having money behind him with his pre-Aftermath mixtape buzz?

No. Hell no. After he got shot nobody wanted to f*ck with him. He was ice cold.

After that he started making noise with mixtapes. There was a bidding war which was kicked into high gear when Em showed interest. The rest is history.

"50 Cent was a plant" is one of the most bizarre things I've read on this site. I got old mags in storage, if I can track it down Blaze did an interview with him and his career had zero traction after the shooting. The industry shut him out.

EDIT:

Maybe one of these NY cats @spliz @Pop123 @FreshAIG can give their version of what happened, I'm in the midwest. But that's what I remember.

Fred.
