Florida State had its first scrimmage of the spring season today, and the initial portion was open.
UPDATED 6:50
-Fisher said he wasn't blown away by the scrimmage. He called it a typical first scrimmage, but added that he would have liked to see more enthusiasm and energy.
-Fisher also said that Ryan Green will miss the rest of spring after having surgery on his shoulder. Fisher also said Mario Pender may have pulled a hamstring. Pender didn't seem to be participating in the tail end of the scrimmage today, so it's likely that FSU will once again be very thin at RB in the spring. -Fisher also said that Reggie Northrup was out with a hamstring injury.
-The young WR core still has a ways to go, Fisher said. He said he'd like to see them be more consistent and more physical.
-Kareem Are drew solid reviews from both Fisher and the players we talked to afterwards.
-LB Reggie Northrup was not in pads and not participating.
-Sophomore RB Ryan Green was on the sidelines with his right arm in a sling. Family members said Green just had surgery and will likely be out until June.
-Ruben Carter split reps between center and guard during the warm-up portions. Tre Jackson was also still not dressed out on the offensive line, and when Jackson and Carter were both elsewhere, Kareem Are took first-team reps at guard.
-Jesus Wilson had been in a blue non-contact jersey for the last few days of practice but was dressed out normally today. Scooter
-Not dressed out for the offense: Green, Jackson, and Scooter Haggins. Not dressed for the defense: Northrup, Derrick Mitchell, Terrance Smith, Nate Andrews, Ronald Darby, Justin Shanks. Only Northrup and Ryan Green are new names.
-FSU ran a few sets with first-team wide receivers, and that unit appeared to include Christian Green, Rashad Greene, Jesus Wilson and Isaiah Jones. Scooter Haggins was still out, so that rotation could still change over the spring.
-Marquez White was back with the football team, it appeared he did not travel to New York with the FSU basketball team in the NIT semifinals.
-The offense was working on late-game situations before the scrimmage. They were working on sideline passing routes, then some more specific stuff. The first and second team had the QBs center the ball on the field after snapping it on the hash for a FG, practiced spiking the ball with the clock running and got into the victory formation. A lot of those are things you take for granted during the season, but you have to practice them so you can execute them without even thinking about it when the situation arises.
-Sean Maguire and the second team offense got 11 snaps that we saw. John Franklin III didn't get snaps before the scrimmage began.
-Roberto Aguayo is still pretty good. Kicked a 40-yard FG and the ball had barely started its descent as it passed through at the top of the uprights.
