It's been a long time since I've read up on it, but I think the real life dude got away by doing something like that, I believe he escaped but was later hunted down by Chuck Adamson--the former Chicago police officer who was the source for a lot of Mann's crime based stuff (he's like what Ed Burns is to David Simon).
You can find appellate cases where the real life dude was convicted of stealing cases of scotch from a rail yard, lowlife shyt like that.
