During the interview, Lowry is discussing Haitian immigrants in the U.S., a topic that has garnered national attention during the past days after high-profile Republicans, including presidential and vice presidential candidates Donald Trump and JD Vance, peddled debunked rumors about them stealing and eating pets in Springfield, Ohio.
"Where (CNN journalist) Dana Bash says that police have gone through 11 months of recordings of calls and they only found two Springfield residents calling to complain about Haitian N-- uhm, migrants taking geese from ponds," Lowry appears to say. Kelly does not interrupt him nor she makes reference to the apparent use of the word after Lowry finishes speaking.
The clip quickly went viral, causing uproar in social media and prompting both Lowry and Kelly to address the issue. The former agreed with an explanation saying he "got crossed up between 'immigrants (short i) and migrants (long i) -- started mispronouncing "migrants" with with short i; instantly corrected himself with no embarrassment because it was patently a mispronunciation. Geez." "Yep, this is exactly what happened —I began to mispronounce the word "migrants" and caught myself halfway through," Lowry said on X.
Kelly reacted to the same explanation, saying "This is so disgusting and obviously leveled by someone that doesn't know Rich Lowry at all." " A finer, more gracious man of good character you will never meet," she added
