Neptunes and Timbo are, at best, second tier producers.

Timbaland and Swizz are probably the two most overrated producers.. always skipped their beats on albums:stopitslime:

Just Blaze, Kanye, 9th Wonder all shyt on Timbo, Swizz n Neptunes.

Both have their hits and misses... I think some of the current r&b singers could benefit from some Neptunes/Timbo production instead of that trap soul shyt. I appreciate both, it's hard to put one over the other.

How you gonna compare mostly hit singles with album filler obscure cuts?

breh most of these cuts were unreleased shyt :scust:

Because the neptunes biggest hits were mainly pop and rap. You would have to go into their more obscure cuts to find that legit "r&b" sound or close to it.

Example:

^^^ Lots of people don't even know they did this joint which is probably their most "soulful" beat.

Or

99% of this board probably has never heard this joint before

I ve had these songs since the early 2000's. And i almost negged and reported this thread for that obvious cherry picking and including ghetto children in the OP :dahell:

Actually Danja said he contributed that part. The sound is a softsynth preset he and Crystal Castles happened to use the same vsti

yeah it was on a sample cd or something like that i had it on my previous hard drive :mjcry:

Im a big neptunes and timbo stan but lets not go this route i could post countless r&b sounding joint that the neptunes produced that still sound fresh as hell

Tell this shyt aint soulful. Those strings and these chords are succulent :eat:

Oh and the royal court produced Ice Box, not timbo

Ah this is in more of my lane as I love producer debates.

Tim vs. the Neptunes is such a hard debate. Both have had an impact in their own ways on this game. Both are from VA; Pharrell influenced by Teddy Riley. Tim influenced by Devante who was also largely influenced by Teddy.

Tim literally created sounds and had his initial run of success in the R&B lane with Aaliyah and Ginuwine and subsequently with Missy. You could literally tell the Timbaland sound. The sound effects, drums... crazy melodies like in One Minute Man. His rap run outside of Missy probably started with Hov and went through the likes of the LOX, Ludacris, Nas... but his main hits in the late 90s were all R&B.

The Aaliyah passing began a lull period for Tim. He did make the Missy album and was a part of the Timberlake album that was a foreshadowing of things to come. And he made Dirt off Your Shoulder. But the beats weren't really evolutionary. That was until he met Danja. Fast forward to 2006 and Timbo began his three year run of dominance revolutionizing his sound once again with Nelly Furtado and Justin Timberlake.

Since then, it's more on and off work (2013 was his big year overall, which eventually led him to Empire and etc.)

But Tim's beats still live on to me. Those drum programs and sounds were just limitless. Redefined production overall. Made producers make something more than just a beat; more than just some 808s and a nice melody.

The Neptunes were revolutionary in the way they made the synths more hip and pop in the 2000s. Some guys from Busta Rhymes, N.O.R.E., and Snoop Dogg have some of their best songs with Pharrell & Chad. The Clipse albums were some of the best produced joints ever. And Pharrell actually is a million times better making hits than producing entire albums (same with Tim). The way they played with the synths defined the 2000s sound and even into this decade.

Now someone mentioned Kanye.... it's worth mentioning that most of the College Dropout/Late Registration beats were originally from his beat tape back in 2000/2001.

Again, it has more to do with what you're hearing right now/past few years than anything to do with being pop or lacking "soul". You can do this same thing by comparing all of that old memphis stuff to what's going on now. The memphis stuff will sound fresher than any of the soulful boom bap from the 90's.

This.

Even in the '90s, what he was doing then sounds current now because a lot of it was ahead of the wave. When I think of Tim's production, I think of his sound as the shift between the 90's and the 00's. That's one of the reasons I feel he's an elite producer in Hip Hop and just music in general.

Timbo was like the first to bridge between hiphop and modern electronica, beat wise

Was bumping this joint yesterday:

and it still sounds so fresh:banderas:

So urban. So....black:ahh:

Timbaland beats for the most part has aged way better than Neptunes beats:

Now don't get me wrong I absolutely love the Neptunes:whoa:

Its just that alot of their beats haven't aged too gracefully.

I can't quite put my finger on it, but I think it has to do with how "futuristic" some of their beats sound. That lazer, video game sound hasn't aged too well.

SuperThug sounds hella outdated now for instance:

Ill keep it r&b for the comparison tho:

I think what it boils down to is "soul".

Damn near impossible to explain with words and only a few of you are gonna get what I'm saying, but Neptunes beats lack "soul" for the most part and is why their beats imo haven't aged as gracefully as Timbalands.

Timbaland beats are geared more for urban audiences and have more soul, while Neptunes have a more "pop" feel to it even when they attempt "r&b".

LOL you would pick some of the worst Neptunes beats to compare against Timbo. I agree on some points, such as their beats kind of lacking soul- hey Pharrel grew up in the suburbs, and was a skater kid. But at least to me, a good majority of the Neptunes beats, especially their top shelf one's have aged very well. N.E.R.D/seeing sounds was some of their best shyt.
