The fact that Drake and J. Cole sampled some Missy album cuts 12 years after the fact also speaks to the timelessness of his production.

Grindin is probably their best beat, and the main one that stands the test of time imo
While I agree it's one of the hardest beats ever because of that pound on the table just spit bars vibe the shyt was so easy to make lol.

They literally used like 4 sounds from a Korg Triton Drum Kit preset. However that's part of the genius of it. Everyone had that keyboard but nobody made that shyt.

It's kinda wild to me, shyt is so fire too.

I think some of it is that the Neptunes even admitted that their beats have a 'thin' sound to them. I believe that's the word they used. So their beats don't have some of the warmth and texture IMO of a lot of their peers. I like their production, but I was always wondering why they would choose to have their beats sound a little more thin and airy. Also, since they did a lot of pop music, their sound really makes you think of a specific time, whuch also dates it more IMO.

Still a great production team though.

How you gonna compare mostly hit singles with album filler obscure cuts?

Because the neptunes biggest hits were mainly pop and rap. You would have to go into their more obscure cuts to find that legit "r&b" sound or close to it.

Example:

^^^ Lots of people don't even know they did this joint which is probably their most "soulful" beat.

Or

99% of this board probably has never heard this joint before

not sure how its a debate, this is very true. honestly feel like Nothing era NERD and Pharrell's last 5 years as a solo producer will hold up more than those tired late 90s joints

Timbo's top shelf always sounds good, from 96-01 he was damn near perfect outside of some of that Magoo shyt which had filler. his mid 90s shyt still sounds amazing
