Interesting, I felt the opposite, cause whenever people bring up boxers or tennis players, they talk about how they don't have to lean on others.
Never really heard this, especially not for boxers. At least not in the tone you're implying because it's reading as if you take that as a copout.

I'm so clueless about Golf

How can someone start getting into Golf? Are the majors they have similar to the Major slams of Tennis?
yeah, kinda. best way to get into golf is to flip on the Masters in April on Sunday and hope for a good competitive field on the final day. the tension is great, you can feel it as they come down to the final 6 holes or so and there are giant momentum swings happening across the field

watching back when Tiger was doing his thing was the best entry to golf, having him in the field just made things feel special

Hes as dominant as Bill Russell. Until I see him do this against a field of mostly black men,im not that impressed, although I do respect it. Secondly I just dont think the other golfers practiced like they were in a real sport until Tiger showed up. Once Tiger showed up and increased the popularity and visibility,I think they started taking it more seriously. And once the competetion started to train harder,he probably just stopped being as dominant. Either that or he allowed a white woman to completely stop his momentum,he could never be goat athlete:picard:

Yea, I think the trade off between not having to lean on others is having to lead, motivate, and cover for others. But I've seen sports media people mention it as the reason why they consider individual sport accomplishments at a higher level than team sport accomplishments

If that's the case then Tennis has a better say for it's athletes being ahead of golfers in regards to these qualifiers. It's you vs the field and it's way more physically demanding than golf.

There's an umpire element on tennis that makes a big impact. We've seen a bunch of big matches were the umpire gets pretty involved.

Not a controversial statement. Tiger's dominance is crazy, and as a kid i didn't even follow golf but I knew to tune in on Sundays of majors. And recently I've starting golfing and got curious and really did a deep dive on tiger's career and even his come up before the pros. Tiger's been better than all his peers since he was like 14. 3 straight Amatuer titles. Dude had cacs writing articles comparing him to Jesus during his rookie PGA season even before he won his first major. Dude was the chosen one and exceeded expectations that were sky high. He was/is the hardest worker, he kinda pioneered modern day strength and conditioning for golfers.

He also doesnt need to break Jack's record. Jack played mostly in an era where Tiger wouldnt have even been allowed play. Tiger has played against way better competition his whole career, he has gone against all the best golfers in the world and he has the most PGA wins ever.

Are you saying he overtrained?

Yeah Tiger said it himself he fukked himself over by going so hard in his 20s.

For the first part of his career, Tiger Woods would start his day with a four-mile run. Next, he’d lift at the gym, play golf for two to three hours and work on his short game. Woods would end his day with another four-miler and possibly some basketball or tennis.

The running “destroyed” him, he said.

“Yeah, not to run so much,” Woods said on GolfTV when asked by a fan: “If you had one thing you could go back in time and tell your younger self, what would it be?”
“Running over 30 miles a week for probably my first five, six years on Tour pretty much destroyed my body and my knees,” Woods said.

Tiger did Marine or SEAL or some type of heavy military training for like 2 years while he was in the PGA Tour because he was bored out of his mind :mjlol:

That shyt ended up fukking up his knees and then the rest of the body followed :smh:

You hit a ball and walk after it.

Regardless of the records.

It does not make you a dominant athlete.

I'm so clueless about Golf

How can someone start getting into Golf? Are the majors they have similar to the Major slams of Tennis?

There are tournaments every week during the season. Tournaments are 4 days starting on Thursdays finishing on Sundays. After Friday they have what's called a 'cut' where the field is cut in half. The top 60 players in the leaderboard move on to play the weekend and the rest go home (players who don't make the cut don't get paid). The higher the placement on tournaments, the bigger the paycheck. The top 125 in the moneylist after the season gets to keep their PGA card, the rest get demoted to their development tour (Korn Ferry Tour). The top 50 Korn Ferry tour players (money list) get a PGA card.

There are 3 types of tournaments in the PGA - regular tournaments, designated events, and majors. The majors are the biggest tournaments. All the top players show up to compete on those (even some LIV players can compete if they have enough OWGR points). Just like tennis majors, they have the most prestige and a big prize money. Designated events are also pretty big. Only players ranked in the top 60 PGA Tour ranking get invited (rank points are awarded after every tournament). I think the prize money is now just as big as the majors plus there is no cutline (everyone is guaranteed a paycheck). Then there are the regular tournaments that that every player with a PGA tour card can participate in.

The season starts in January and ends in the fall. They have a playoff format where the top 70 in ranking participate. The playoffs consist of 3 tournaments. The first tournament starts at 70 players. The second tournament only invites the top 50. And the final tournament invite the top 30. Every tournament in the playoffs guarantees money for participants. The winner of the playoffs last year was awarded $18M.

The biggest thing for the players is getting into that top 60 PGA ranking. They get to play in the majors and designated events where they are guaranteed money. There's a designated event going on right now called the Genesis Invitational. Tiger is playing for the first time this year. If you're gonna tune in, tune in on Sundays. Group pairings on the weekend are determined by the leaderboard with the top players being paired up and going in the order of their place in the leaderboard with the leaders going last.

The craziest Tiger record is him making the cut in 142 straight events. That record will never be broken.
