LAS VEGAS -- Keith Thurman and Robert Guerrero, fighting in the first main event on NBC in prime time in 30 years, opened adviser Al Haymon's brainchild, the "Premier Boxing Champions" series, with a bruising, bloody bang Saturday night at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.
It was a spirited, exciting fight filled with power punches and toe-to-toe exchanges, but Thurman dominated. He dropped Guerrero hard in the ninth round and went on to win a lopsided unanimous decision as he retained his welterweight world title for the first time before an announced crowd of 10,106.
When it came to the fight, Thurman and Guerrero delivered the action fans hoped for, despite the one-sided nature of the scorecards.
If Guerrero, Thurman or any of the other top fighters who will appear on PBC on NBC do that, boxing might be back in prime time for many years to come.
Bleacher Report
It was a great performance by Thurman, a gutty showing from Guerrero and an exciting fight all around. Despite the lopsided results, neither fighter will lose any prestige after the bout.
Bad Left Hook...
In a fight that wound up living up to expectations in the end, Keith Thurman dropped and then survived Robert Guerrero over 12 rounds tonight on PBC on NBC, winning on wide scores in a fight where he had to earn every point.
Bloody Elbow...
If the co-main event (or "first of two main events" as Al Michaels and others on the broadcast parroted) was the anti-thriller, the main event between rising welterweight (147 lbs) star Keith Thurman and Robert Guerrero was a desperately sought crowd-pleaser. Thurman and Guerrero wasted no time engaging from the opening bell, with the favored Thurman relying heavily on his powerful fight hand while Guerrero tried to catch Thurman with perfectly timed counterpunches. The crowd cheered both men at the final bell after an entertaining bout, particularly the final 6 rounds which produced the best action of the whole broadcast.
Sherdog's recap of the 12th round...
Guerrero assuredly needs a knockout in order to win this fight. As expected he races after Thurman and unloads a furious assault. Thurman retreats and regroups, clearly on his bike while popping out jabs. Thurman digs a right to the body. Guerrero is desperately trying to go to war but Thurman won’t allow it. Hard counter right by Thurman as Guerrero charges in, but he takes it well. Finally, Guerrero gets what he wants and it’s toe-to-toe in the center of the ring for a short time. Guerrero lands a few good shots, forcing Thurman to retreat. The crowd is heavily behind “The Ghost”,chanting his name. “One Time” again delivers a right uppercut as Guerrero charges in. Thurman digs a aeft uppercut on the inside and they stand forehead-to-forehead against the ropes, tearing into each other until the bell finally rings.
And we all love Sherdog...
