You know what's funny about this. White people don't care about poor whites. They don't try to act like them, talk like them, or even acknowledge them. Black people care about poor blacks. This is the biggest difference between whites and blacks...

Mid class and upper mid class whites separate themselves from the poor Whites.

Blacks keep their connection.... There's a good and bad to that.

Upper mid a d mid class Black families are usually only one generation from their poor side.

Or only one part of the family is doing well.
So they always have aunt's, uncle's, cousins, friends who don't have as much as them.

So they are always going to be connected to the ghetto...
Either imitating ghetto culture or just going back to help out.

It's beautiful... And destructive at the same time.
Because keeping that attachment to the ghetto is dangerous

This argument doesn’t make too much sense to me. He completely ignores the fact that black folks moved to the cities to work in factories. Factories that shutdown in the 70’s, 80’s and later on. He also ignores the fact that black folks bought houses and new cars in these cities at the time and nuclear family structure was the norm in the black community back then. And ignores the fact that drugs from Mexico, Afghanistan and Colombia along with tons of guns magically appeared in every ghetto in America in the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s getting worse with every passing decade up until the 90’s and some places to this day. And that the welfare system and Section 8 destroyed the family unit. They call public housing the projects because it’s basically a population control experiment. Truth hiding in plain sight. He also ignores that dysfunctional fukking your sister shoot everything in sight and don’t know how to read cracker culture is still alive and well in huge swaths of the country (i.e. Appalachia). Dude sounds like Uncle Ruckus to me.

He's an OG c00n with an academic veneer. He cherry-picks data and makes strawman arguments which is why racist white people always bring him up "support" their points. He's an economist by trade but the right never refers to him for serious economic issues only racial issues.

He bit from a guy who wrote a book called Cracker Culture. It was an analysis of Southern white culture in the old South and how it was created from the less developed parts of northern England, Scotland and Ireland.

How he connected that Cracker culture to black culture so completely is flawed at best and straight up deception at worst.

Dysfunction in certain classes of black America are more a function of racially oppressive system way more than Cracker Culture bleeding into black culture.

Thomas Sowell disregards 350 years of slavery and Jim Crow to make his argument so he get a pat on the head from his conservative paymasters.

He works for the Hoover Institute which is the retirement home for right wing ideologues.

Poverty stricken whites don’t kill each other over what neighborhood they live in or a color of a rag. When whites are in gangs, they are usually biker gangs. And biker gangs don’t have that dynamic. Cities like Baltimore have white ghetto areas, but there is much less serious violence in those areas. White folks don’t have multigenerational trauma from slavery and Jim Crow. Also, statistically, whites are much more likely to use and abuse drugs. Even at the height of the crack epidemic, the majority of crack users were white, but the majority of people charged for crack possession were black because it guaranteed mandatory minimum sentences. But whites are statistically the least likely to be in gangs. And Latinos and even some Asians, especially in hoods in Cali, are stuck in the cycle of poverty, gangs and violence too and never were in close proximity to redneck whitey from England. How do explain that?
