In that case every single "reward" (MVP, Grammy etc.) given to a human performance holds no weight, because they all come down to subjectivity. The difference being that we don't "vote" on what is a classic album or not, but if we did some albums would def separate themselves from the rest. there are some albums that you just cannot NOT like if you listen to hip-hop (Doggystyle, The Chronic, Reasonable Doubt, OBC4L for example...) IMO

Even the thought that an album is any thing more than a personal classic is :mindblown:

There is no universal categories that people agree that need to be checked off to be classic

Everyone doesn't listen to music the same.

Sidenote: I find it funny how most classics came in 90s where people grew up listening to them and they became sort of "soundtrack to their teens"

Then they look upon them with nostalgia
Nothing about something being classic has to do with 100% of the population liking it or even having heard it.

I get tired of posting this but whatever:

clas·sic (klsk)
adj.
1.
a. Belonging to the highest rank or class.
b. Serving as the established model or standard: a classic example of colonial architecture.
c. Having lasting significance or worth; enduring.

Something being classic is determined by the culture in general, whether it be a musical, film, art, books, etc. If a work has significant impact, quality and lasts the test of time that culture collectively makes it a classic. You personally don't like The Godfather? Well nobody gives a fukk because the film culture has deemed it a classic for the impact it had on film, the quality of the movie and the fact that it still stands as one of the greatest films of all time.

You don't like The Chronic? Tough shyt. Nothing about a classic is personal (pertaining to one person). It's the culture that it' a part of that dictates that. A lot more classics came out of the 90's than the 00's or 10's because that music has had the ability to stand the test of time. It's called a "test" for a reason. An album can be amazing and have immediate impact on the culture but if it's not remembered in 10 years then it was just a great album. I think GKMC is a classic, if we forget about it by 2022 then it's not a classic.

Give it time...the many albums that came out for this generation will be heralded as classics in 10 years time

It needs time to be remembered first

I understand and see what OP is saying which is why to be honest if Im doing the whole classic discussion it is on overall impact.

I never use personal tastes for deciding classics because just as u said, things like nostalgia and the like come into play...

If the impact is great then I deem it classic whether or not I like it

:yeshrug:

Problem is people think that an impactful classic means we gotta all accept it as better than anything else :what: if someone thinks take care is better than it was written than that's his opinion just like vice versa would be an opinion. Classic doesn't mean everyone should like it. Its subjective like anything else. Impact is not really subjective but doesn't make somthing untouchable

There's no such thing as a "universally accepted classic". Pretty much every thing you think is classic is a "personal classic". It's all opinion, that's why I laugh when nikkaz basically try to argue for pages what is and what aint a classic.

I disagree, Impact on who exactly, the individual, a particular demographic, local, national, international, the entire human race?

sounds pretty subjective to me....

This stuff is so objective. It amazes me that some of you spend hours on here arguing about which albums are classic and which are not.

Stop thinking of Hip Hop as a subjective force for a minute.

Hip Hop is everything that tries to be Hip Hop so there's no "real" Hip Hop, but there is a definite character to almost everything that claims to be Hop and there is a recognizable influence in things that are not considered Hop (since the earliest break beats were from Mickey Mouse albums, Rock albums, Counrtry, whatever had a break).

What is Hip Hop itself if not the people who practice? The recordings and graphics are artifacts of the culture. The historical record of the people.

If the people tend to say Chronic is classic then it's classic. Democracy.
