This needs to be said. Stern tough acting white guy with a beard is not character.

I think this is one of the main WWE problems. No characters. Roman just got one. It’s also why none of these released guys matter. Braun, Black, hell Seth Rollin, just dudes with beards. And I love Rollins and think Braun was wasted. But no one outside of core wrestling fans care about any of them. :yeshrug:

end rant.

Stroman is big enough that it's a character in itself, but on a lot of these other guys I agree. Buddy Murphy, Alister Black, half of NXT, etc

Yeap... which is why I've recently gained even greater respect for the era when I started watching, the late 80s... because even though there wasn't a huge focus on workrate (some guys could work but that wasn't the main focus), damn near all of em had a personality and a distinct character that made them memorable. The ones who didnt were very few, but most of those characters are so memorable a lot of us are here 30 years later bringing them up. Whether it's Warrior, Perfect, Bossman, Bad News, Rick Rude, even Koko B Ware... there was a specific thing about their characters that made people cheer or boo. Not that there's no wrestlers who do that now, but there's a LOT of dudes whose only gimmick is that they wrestle and look kinda tough. That shyt only goes so far.

I fw Messiah Seth, don’t know why they dropped it :francis:

This man gets it.

Messiah Seth had something going for a bit. I was expecting some deep dark dive shyt with the gimmick where he does a "Jim Jones" and poison the jobbers while he "disappears" (Since The Man was giving birth, it would had been a dope segment to send him off for a bit).

Yet...here we are with the same recycled shyt for a decade:shaq2:

So you want a return to a world full of wrestling garbage men, police officers, repo men, clowns, barbers, etc., right? You probably want it somewhere in the middle of what it is now and what it used to be.

Like @DANJ! said, at least in the '80s, '90s, early 2000s it was easy to tell the guys apart. Now you just have a whole bunch of people that wear similar trunks (think guys that came from ROH and all happen to have some background in some mixed martial art) or a bunch of guys w/ beards and stern faces.

Aleister Black had a character (or was getting one), but you’re correct. People connect with identifiable characters with actual motives. It’s only so far you can get with “grateful happy to be here”, “grinded in the indies now I’m on the grandest stage of them all” and “guy that’s an awesome wrestler” characters

The WWE is way too family friendly for that. They surprised us every once in a while by giving us storylines like "Seth taking his opponents eyes out" or "Lashley and Lana adulterous relationship", but in general they can't really do too many Attitude Era-type things. That's why Lucha underground was so refreshing when they brought the craziness back into wrestling.

True but they burnt a man to death on TV and let Bliss ride Orton. :francis:While the WWE is family friendly, they can at least have a stable to twist the rating a little bit then go back to the bland vanilla shyt :shaq2:
