Japan was a tiny island nation. The US ran from Nazi Germany because 1. They were of the same philosophy and 2. The US doesn't fight countries that can actually fight back.

And they only wanted to fight Germany after Russia turned the tide at Stalingrad. Before then Germans were assumed to be unconquerable and the US didn't want any part of that.

Before then the last time the US fought someone that could actually go toe to toe with them was the War of 1812. And we all know what happened then

So the US is just barking but they're not doing anything to North Korea or China.

It's weird. At the height of the British Empire, the British could admit when they lost wars. But they were extremely rational about it and made plans to eventually get back at their enemies.
