Well, a lot of young people get their music from the net, so they tend to listen to "indie artists" so I wouldn't be so sure they aren't getting a well rounded music experience.

The music that is being made in this generation is 10x better than all that preceded is purely because there are more than 10 popular artists like in the 80s. People that say "oh the 80s / 70s had better music will cherry pick the bangers from that era and omit the mountains of 
music that was also made then. There is music that is made in the style of 70s/80s music still today as well as new genres that aren't even concepts back then so by sheer numbers the music today is better.
Don't get me wrong I agree there is a lot of rubbish especially within rap / hop but you are letting mainstream music dictate what you listen to which is just dumb 
you wouldn't watch Golden Girls all day because that's the channel it was on when you switched the tv on. Do some musical research nikka

Rt I basically only listen to trap if its hip hop. I think the disconnect is older folks don't rly understand the importance of 808s and the vibe they add to the sound. If it doesn't bang it doesn't rly have a place in my rotation. Is it sad? IMO no cus its turnt AF Lol its the opposite of sad in my eyes
Lyrical stuff doesn't rly appeal to me mainly cus I don't like what a lot of dudes have to say. I'm p smart I got my own views and a lot of respected lyricists don't rly appeal to me. Musically or lyrically. I wanna see rappers take the energy of trap, work the vibe a lil differently and spit about life shyt from a more unique perspective, jus hearing the same shyt from the 90s but reworked doesn't work for me.

Underachievers use trap beats an they got some of the hardest raps in the game. Same wit dudes like joey fatts an Aston Matthews, denzel curry an a lot of these new trap nikkas running soundcloud can spit. I think that's where the movement is right now and if u can't get into it ur ass out

The problem is that anybody can get on nowadays. People used to have to go thru hoops. Yea there was definitely a lot of trash and industry plants that got on but for the most part people had to really have talent becuz someone had to sign them and give them a deal. With the net its all DIY
Its always been nikkas saying simple shyt making hits. An its always been nikkas going hard on their own sound making classics. The difference is these days those dudes can eat an still be virtually unknown, cus its clear to me most ppl are sleeping on the best new rappers. Maxo Larry June even OG maco has real shyt but ppl think all trap rappers don't try and say stupid shyt.

As an 'Old Head' I feel like good music is still out there, just not as promoted as it used to be.
Gone are the days when you could walk into a Sam Goody or The Wiz, buy a CD/tape off the shelf without ever hearing a track on it beforehand, and NOT throwing it in the trash upon listening to the first couple tracks.
We got spoiled by how accessible stuff was on mainstream media. Now, you have to actually search for it.

Y'all don't even realize that you all prove the OP's point every time y'all say this
Back in the day there was a thing called "balance" . I could turn my radio on and hear music from cats like Common, Talib Kweli, Mos Def, The Roots, Digable Planets, Arrested Development, etc. I could hear positive and uplifting messages in the mainstream. Even somebody like Tupac could make club joints like How Do You Want It and I Get Around then make a soulful joint like Dear Mama or a deep message like Changes.
There is no more balance and that's by design. There is a specific agenda why 90% of music that's given a mainstream platform promotes and glorifies destructive behaviour. Y'all keep thinking its "just entertainment" tho
