that's why its better but beyond that the mangas are about in the same league with each other. I'm not really trying to rush One Piece to a conclusion but its taken far too long to tell the story its telling. its gonna be pushing 17 years soon. I mean stuff like Dragonball took 11 even Naruto is gonna wrap in 15 and Fullmetal did it in 9.

Granted I haven't read a chapter on One Piece in about 3 years I just don't understand how he conceptualized a story that's taken 17 years to reach a half way point especially when there was none-essential stuff like Skypiea in it. the Teens that grew up reading One Piece are in their 30s now and will likely be in their mid 50s by the time it ends.
:dahell:Because that's how long Oda took to do the story and Skypeia/Jaya is ridiculously relevant. So much shyt happened in it that has came back it's ridiculous. What are you talking about.

all i'm saying is its a shounen manga (ie targeted at kids) that if you started reading it as a kid you'll likely be 50 before it ends. not like something you started as a kid and you're in your early to mid 20s and it ends. i mean if you start reading a comic at 15 at 50 you're a world away from when you started.

You gotta understand that these Dragonball/One Piece/Naruto/FMA are completely different as far as how/when the author expected to end it.

Dragonball = Akira Toriyama never had any particular ending planned out for DBZ, in fact he made it up as he went along (he's admitted this). He was originally gonna end way earlier (like, when Goku was still a kid) but got pressured into continuing it because it was popular. After the Buu Saga he pretty much ended it suddenly and unexpectedly because writing the manga was stressful. So my point is that Dragonball was never intended to be any particular length (nor did it have any particular ending), the author just kept it going for a while due to it being popular.

FMA= Author had the ending set from the start and planned the manga to go for a set length of time, and mostly stuck to it. She basically came up with the ending first and then created the story to lead up to it. So in this case the manga was a set number of chapters with a particular ending planned - the opposite of DBZ.

One Piece = Was originally only planned to run for about five years, but it was so popular (and Oda enjoyed writing it so much) that it's gone much longer. However, he has stated many times that he's had a very specific ending planned from the start, it'll be very surprising, and that it hasn't changed. He never had every single arc planned out (or anything like that), but he's had the overall direction of the story, major plot twists, and ending planned for a while. So OP has a set ending, but not a set length.

Naruto = Kishi has the ending planned, but is just dragging things out to make the manga last longer (probably $$$ related).

So my point is just that the situations are different. Some mangas have a set ending and length (FMA), some have a set ending but not a set length (Naruto and OP), and some don't have either (DBZ). BTW, it's a good time to get back into One Piece.

I think I remember a study saying 80-90% of One Piece readers in Japan were over 18. Considering the manga started in the late 90s, that makes sense.

I thought he said he was about half way done with One Piece. meaning if he's 17 years in and half way done it'll be 34 years before its finished. theoretically a kid that was 15 when it started could potentially be a grandfather by the time it ends. that's insane.

According to this - http://onepiece.wikia.com/wiki/One_Piece_Newspaper

There was an interview last year where Oda said One Piece was around 60% done. We're getting to the point where Luffy is challeging high/top tiers in his world, so we're getting there. But yeah, the series is hella long, it's kinda crazy.

Picture me waiting for it t finish so I can binge on it. If he does take another 17 years, I'd be starting in 2034... When I'm 44 years. :flabbynsick:

The thing thats funny about it is even after 16 years the plot of One Piece remains engaging. He has enough characters and foreshadowing going on that he has interesting plot to tell for years and years and the fans wont get burnt out (like bleach or naruto)
One Piece really is the GOAT

Right now the only anime I watch is Naruto Shippuden and Hajime no Ippo Rising. I don't read the mangas I prefer seeing the action unfold

Because most people that watch anime had a crap time in school, so they want to watch a show where they "do it right"

That's why that Watamore show flopped, it was too real.
