Edy is a marginal NBA player, Splitter is coming off a hip injury not sure what were gonna get from him. If Dwight isn't able to play 70-80 games this isn't a roster deep enough to make the playoffs. I give Bud and his staff all the credit but don't forget Bud's top player developer, Kenny Atkinson, coaches the Nets now. We need Dwight to play and play a significant amount of games especially now that Millsap is coming off knee surgery
Ridiculous. Ain't no way we don't make the playoffs. I don't care if splitter starts all year...we way more deeper. This team is top 4 easy

I disagree & it's not like Splittee played well when healthy last yr. Center is a question mark from a health position. We're young at SF. We're weak at SG. I don't see this as a top 4 team based on those factors, but we'll see. This is a new starting 5 and they're gonna have to learn how to play with each other...that's not just gonna happen overnight

I understand your concern but these guys took the initiative and been working out together since August to develop chemistry. Korver looks much improved but we got a better thjr and bembry at the 2 so we in better condition than last yr. We'll see but I'm a bit optimistic

Korver's not a starting SG in this league anymore. He's not. But he will be and he's not being pushed to start. He can look good in the summer when he's making 15 sec Vine videos, but it's not 2014 anymore.

Our depth is a concern too...THJR didn't really get into the rotation until half way through the season (I know he was hurt early in the year but he wasn't a consistent backup). I'm not counting on the rooks until I see them on the court against NBA talent

Again I hope that this is a top 4 squad, but there's a lot of questions that need to be answered

ATHENS — Something was different about this first practice.

The Hawks’ offensive and defensive schemes won’t be overhauled after offseason roster additions. They will be tweaked. However, there was a noticeable change to the group that underwent the initial workout in preparation for the upcoming NBA season.

“Nothing changes,” said Kent Bazemore of the Hawks’ ingrained systems. “We just have a big dominant guy down the middle in Dwight (Howard). He had a large presence today around the rim. It feels good when you can throw the ball down low and watch somebody go to work.” :leon:

Dennis Schroder began his first training camp as the starting point guard. Bazemore noted a solid start to Schroder and Howard working together and with the rest of the group.

The new Hawks season officially got underway on Tuesday with the first day of training camp held at the University of Georgia.

Many of the Hawks were in Atlanta for much of the summer. They gathered for voluntary workouts and were joined by most of the team through September. Such workouts are good. But the real work begins now.

“The energy was good,” Hawks coach Mike Budenholzer said. “The level of understanding and wanting to understand if you don’t understand was at a high level.

“Right now, you have to start teaching. You have to start building those foundational blocks, especially defensively, your roles and things that are non-negotiable. Get into a little bit of the detail so you can get them back playing as quickly as possible and at as high level as possible. There is a lot of detail that goes into training camp and these types of practices.”

The Hawks return 11 players from last season. However, there are 20 players in camp that includes Howard, four rookies, a free-agent and three invites. There will be a great deal of continuity for the Hawks but there will be some change.

“The effort has been amazing all summer,” Howard said. “All the guys who have been in every day, we worked hard to get to this point. It’s showing. Everybody came in with a great attitude today and we got a lot of work done. Very happy with the first day.”

The Hawks will remain in Athens through Thursday before returning to Atlanta. Budenholzer noted last week the extreme competitive nature he expected. There are 15 roster spots available and several players with NBA experience won’t make it to opening night.

“The energy and intensity today was where it needed to be,” Bazemore said of the first workout. “Everyone in the gym, from coaches to players to management, is excited to be here today. The anticipation lived up to the hype. We had a great month of September with all the guys there, stayed in the weight room and battled on the court. It carried over. It’s what we need this year. A group that is going to show up every night and be competitive. I think we have that.”

Budenholzer said all players made it through the two-plus hour workout healthy. Starting power forward Paul Millsap was “very, very limited” he said. Millsap recently had a non-surgical procedure on his right knee and will be nearly shutdown for the first three weeks of training camp. Jarrett Jack is returning from a torn ACL in his right knee suffered with the Nets last season. The team is bringing the guard along slowly. Jack said he has done drill work leading up to camp but has not participated in five-on-five scrimmage work. Budenholzer said Jack participated in most non-contact drills Tuesday.

The Hawks will hold an evening practice Tuesday, the first of two two-a-day workouts in Athens.

:banderas:

Having Howard instead of Horford is going pay dividends, IMMEDIATELY. Du-wop and Schro is going to be a major upgrade in the toughness and mental departments for this team. I can't wait to watch this shyt this year :ohlawd:

Them boys they a handful :whew: Team is instantly more competitive with those two than Al & Teague (no offense but :manny:)

I really wanna see how the rookies impact the team...I think Prince could start at SF and Baze slide to the 2. Bud even admitted as much that ideally he'd like to see Baze at SG, which is his natural position. Should be a breakout season for Baze. New contract, he's the unquestioned best perimeter player on the team, time to see him do work...I'm expecting career highs from him across the board

:salute:to Baze for firing shots at that soft nikka Whoreford

Yea that's why I bolded it. It seemed like a veiled shot at Al...no hard feelings, but seeing Al shoot 3 pointers and get no rebounds is tough to watch. If you a big man get yo ass on the block and eat. Rebounds, blocked shots and inside scoring are all going up this season. Can Dwight play smart, not commit dumb fouls and stay healthy doe?

4 Quotes Worth Reading From First Week of Hawks Camp | Atlanta Hawks

4 Quotes Worth Reading From First Week of Hawks Camp

Kyle Korver, on the what he saw in pre-camp 5-on-5 sessions of open gym:

“We have a really competitive group. Our group the last couple of years had a real steadiness to us. And that was good, but sometimes it wasn’t good, too. I think maybe this group has a little more fire and is a little more vocal, a little more expressive. ‘Expressive’ is a good word. We have a lot more expression on this team and I think it’s going to help us. I think it creates a higher ceiling. :sas2:You’ve got to ride that wave of emotion a little bit. There may be a couple of stinkers because of it, but I think at the end of the day, that’s the biggest thing that I see."

Dwight Howard, on keeping the ball moving in a pass-focused offense:

“I’ve done that before. The offense is similar to Orlando’s, except it’s more spread out here. All of the passing out of double teams and passing out of the post, those are things that I’ve done my whole career. I think a lot of that stuff has gotten lost because of the past couple of seasons, but all that stuff is behind me now. This opportunity that I have in front of me, I’m going to take full advantage of it.“

Taurean Prince, on growing nine inches in high school and changing positions:

“I was 5-foot-9 in my freshman year, and I got to 6-foot-6 by my senior year. I was on the wing a little bit growing up. As soon as I got to 6-foot-3, I moved to (center) and I was a permanent center in high school. I switched to (power forward) for my college years, so I wasn’t playing on the wing for about four or five years straight, and then one of my former teammates got injured, so I moved to the wing and I just started taking it seriously from there and getting better in that area."

Mike Scott, on watching the TV show Atlanta:

"I watch it every Tuesday night. That’s a dope show. I like how they’re really in the city of Atlanta. Some shows that film in Atlanta, they don’t show the real Atlanta. The show Atlanta shows the real Atlanta and I like that."

"I like how they use Bankroll P.J. They use the Migos. They use people that are from Atlanta, and they use them in the shot. I like that."

(Scott was torn on picking his favorite character from the trio of Earn, Darius and Paper Boi, but was leaning toward Darius for being funny.)

Atlanta Hawks' Taurean Prince showing he is NBA ready

Prince has the NBA-ready body, now comes the rest of the work

Talk to Hawks coaches and management about rookie Taurean Prince and they immediately comment about his NBA-ready body.

What does that really mean?

“Somebody who can guard multiple positions and not get punked on any level of the floor, offense or defense,” surmised the 6-foot-7, 225-pound first-round draft pick.

The Hawks selected Prince, via a trade with the Jazz, with the 12th overall pick of this year’s NBA Draft. The 22-year old spent four seasons at Baylor and blossomed into a versatile wing who fits the Hawks on both ends of the court.

Prince has two days of an NBA training camp under his belt. He has continued to show the promise the Hawks saw on draft night, during the Las Vegas Summer League and recent voluntary workouts.

“He continues to be impressive for a young player,” coach Mike Budenholzer said of Prince after Wednesday morning’s practice at the University of Georgia. “Just his maturity from a physical standpoint, his size and strength, really helps. He’s learning well. The competitiveness of this camp plays to him well.”

Budenholzer noted last week that the addition of Prince, along with center Dwight Howard and a starting role for point guard Dennis Schroder, gives the Hawks’ defense a more physical and competitive identity.

Prince joined the Hawks late in summer league while the final details of the trade, such as player physicals, were completed. He said in the months since he got on the court with his new teammates, the physical adjustment has been minor. The mental side of the game and familiarity with the system, especially the floor spacing, of the professional ranks has been the biggest difference.

“To me, the speed is kind of the same,” Prince said. “The more noticeable change is the spacing. In college, you can stay in the paint all night long if you want to. Now, you have prolific players and there is no (weakness in the game) of who you are playing with. Guys have to stay with their guys and can’t help as much which opens things up for other people.”

Budenholzer agreed that floor spacing is one of the greatest adjustments for young players, especially a versatile player such at Prince. He is working in training camp to know when to slash to the basket and when to give teammates room to operate.

A big part of the training camp experience has been the ability to learn from a mistake and quickly move on. Prince said Wednesday that Hawks veterans have worked with him, on and off the court, to get acclimated to the professional game and learn the nuances of the system.

“To be honest, I think I have progressed a lot more mentally than anything,” Prince said. “Just being able to shake off the mistakes because they are going to happen. That’s the nature of the game, being able to shake off the mistakes, move on to the next thing and not let one mistake lead to two.

“Also, I just want to fall in love with the process. Fall in love with getting better. Fall in love with being coachable. Fall in love with receiving constructive criticism. Just being a sponge, taking everything in, good or bad, and turning it into a positive.”

The Hawks have a great deal of depth at the wing position with Kyle Korver, Kent Bazemore, Thabo Sefolosha and Tim Hardaway Jr. To that mix they have added Malcolm Delaney, first-round pick DeAndre Bembry and Prince. It has made for a competitive game and the battle figures to continue into exhibition and regular-season games to establish a rotation. This much is clear, Prince is making his case.
