I think a large part of it is the physical resemblance between the two and to a lesser degree the similarities of their playstyle and mindset. If Ant looked like Vernon Maxwell I don’t think we’d see the comparison as much

You have to split the face of the league in 2. The American/Domestic market and then the Overseas International market.

They want an American who can take over from LeBron and Steph once they are gone. Luka Giannis and Jokic are the international faces of the league. That won't change.

And then you have Wemby who is probably the only one who covers both because of the spectacle he brings.

Peak LeBron is more like a Wilt/Magic/Malone hybrid. A true 1 of 1. He's a freak athlete like Wilt...oversized PG like Magic but in the body of Karl Malone. The comp to MJ never made sense.

Luka - he's the Euro Larry Bird. Talks shyt, not a freak athlete but dude just makes shyt happen. Him, Jokic and Giannis will keep global fans engaged.

The next great American? Therein lies the conundrum the NBA is facing. There are a lot of really good young American players but are any of them in the ballpark of Luka/Jokic if we're being 100% honest?

Millenials (1981 to 1996) produced a shytload of elite American ballers (KD, Steph, LeBron, Kawhi, Harden, Westbrook, Melo, Dwight etc)....and foreign ballers (Jokic/Giannis). Gen Z has their foreign MJ in Luka but we ain't got the domestic one yet.

MJ retired in 02/03 who came into the league from the 03/04 season wearing 23. For the media a seamless transition.

It’s like young Black men with extraordinary promise in the NBA are sacrificed at the altar of Jordan’s legacy, the knife is expectations and sports media is the executioner.

Rather than letting these players organically create their own legacies they have to be set to a ridiculous standard that both alienates younger fans from Jordan because their era of superstars are constantly delegitimized and alienates the older fans because they aren’t given a chance to actually move on from that era.

I know they’ve already begun, but I really hope they leave Ant alone and let him be himself. In general, they need to quit comparing young players to Jordan. End rant.

They’re never gonna put an end to that marketing because it works.

Even though it adds pressure, being compared to MJ has done Ant way more good than not receive the comps at all.


Besides, most of these guys either used Jordan as a model for their game, or used Kobe as a model, which is the same shyt. The comps are inevitable, they’re really a compliment.
