I'm almost certain they'd have arrested him and charged him with something before he died. They were building an indictment of some sort on him.

On one hand I get it, but as a journalist himself, I kinda feel uncomfortable with the way that Roland is trying to do damage control. I know King is his frat/boule brother and he wants to preserve his legacy and I originally felt the same way, but I think I’ve evolved to where the truth is the truth and let people grapple with and piece together a man by his humanity and not by his deification. We are calling on America itself to reframe how we look at our founding fathers, who are the very symbols of liberty to the country, in conjunction with the genocide that they perpetuated against natives and the humans rights atrocities they committed against blacks. If we are doing that, it is only fair that we apply the same measures to our own leaders.
Just recently, we had the uproar over the 1619 Project that posits that the reason for the Revolutionary War was to preserve slavery, not to fight for freedom. The whole premise of that project is that we need to deal with the truth and stop all this mythologizing. And I agree.
I do agree with Roland though, that we should be heavily skeptical of the FBI files. Where I diverge from Roland is from his stance that we should outright dismiss them as false. That’s where he should know better as a journalist.
If you look at the thread of the tweet that Nap just posted, they show the FBI file where they document the rape. What makes me skeptical is that while the document is typed out, the part that details King laughing while the woman is being raped and giving stroke advice to the Baltimore minister that’s raping her, that portion is handwritten in. So I’m not entirely convinced about that.

The mission is still clear.. Black people who are the descendents of slaves in this country must continue to battle for our fair shake in the prosperity of this country..

I haven’t let their person character failings color my opinions of them because the movement is greater.
We need to get to a point where we stop holding up our leaders as “moral authorities”. Once we do that, scandals coming out won’t mean shyt and weaponized as a way to take a person down.
There is nothing to grapple with....look at the source of information, anything to bring down our Black Heroes....

Of course the FBI violated hella rules and damn near watched everything that encouraged the death of all black leaders with informants and straight up assassinations.
But this is a specific claim about Martin's personal life that extraordinary lengths have gone to suppress on BOTH sides.
Even the FBI lowkey doesn't wanna revisit it because they think it would be a bad look on all sides.
This country does a lot of myth making to keep certain images up of who and what people are or what they did...MLK isn't immune to that. Clearly.

exactly.. They weren't moral authorities, just leaders in a movement.. And if it comes out that he did rape women. What can we in 2021 do about it? If they pull down all his monuments and holidays, does that mean black people still shouldn't "come to get our check" like he said?
