All hair is dead. But a lot of the hair that sheds stays in locs. It just does. It’s not the same.
Of course it does. However that has little to do with the actual retaining of length. I've seen people take dreads apart. And even once the shed hair is gone, the length they grew remained. That's b/c dreads much like other protective hairstyles incorporate the three elements I mentioned earlier, little to no manipulation, no heat, no chemicals.

The less we do with our hair, the faster it grows.

to be honest with you most of these natural women you grown their hair to be over 20 inches long or those who can grow over six inches in one year are american women who mostly have 3c/4a/4b hair types. In Southern African countries most women and men have TRUE 4C hair that takes FOREVER to grow and show length that most of them get frastrated and end up resorting to extensions. Hell a good example is myself. I have true 4C hair kinky ass hair. I had a bald haircut in march and it has been 8 months since I went to the barber and my hair is only 2.5 inches long as of today (this is after I have been using sulphate free shampoos, conditioners and JBCO and biotin) :to:. Now imagine how the females in my country feel when they watch those videos knowing they wont ever see shoulder length with hair that grows less than 4 inches a year.
That's a lie.
Take this Nigerian chick.

Her hair is one of the tightest kinkiest textures which really just means her curl pattern is very, very, small.
With tiny little curls, the reason why it seems like it won't grow is b/c tiny tight curls have more coiled curves which translates to more areas for breakage in the hair shaft.
Thus if u don't care for this kind of hair it breaks faster than it grows.

However, style it in hairstyles with little manipulation, condition it, no heat or chemicals, and it easily grows waist length within a few years. On average hair grows about 6 inches per year. One of the possible reasons for the hair not growing longer is wear fros which can cause the strains to tangle on themselves and break. We have to wear our hair in low manipulation styles that stretch and detangle our hair and deep condition it, which is why braided styles and twists are so popular in our culture. Ideally twisting ur hair up and spritz it with a little oil and water daily and it'll grow like wildfire.

Edit: Also in my previous post, I deliberately chose blk women with kinkier hair textures to demonstrate hair growth. Like her

Or her

There's a lady in my program from the Sudan and her hair is growing shoulder length since we started doing it. She told me her mother told her it would never grow that long. We have some ignorant ideas about our hair that have been passed down generations.
Water for moisture, oil to seal and condition, no heat, no chemicals, deep condition and style it in styles that stretch and detangle it and don't require daily manipulation. It'll retain length.

LOL at calling that hair super kinky...shiiiiiiet you must have never seen truely kinky hair. Plus it is well know over here that nigerians and Ghanians have hair similar to americans because i bump into many guys who have 4a and 4b hair. Its even aparent when they get waves.
This is an example of kinky to us South Africans

this is a perfect example of the longest natural hair I see in my normal days....nothing like you describe where hair is at waist length.

Its sad that a long of women refuse to accept that genetics play a HUGE role in how long your hair can be. Its not all about the conditioners and all that. I know it simply cause i've been takin EXTRA care of my own hair but its only 2.5 inches long in 8 months of growth. I wish you lived in Southern Africa so you could actually see for yourself what im talking about.
Look at Sera's hair before it grew longer. Her texture was actually tighter than the ones you listed. What's sad is us accepting lies to the extent that we don't know ourselves. Breakage not growth affects hair length and whether u retain the length. It's actually quite simple logic. But sista tales will steal the day.

They do. It isn't just dead hair b/c u can grow ur hair long really quickly by leaving them in two strand twists as well.

The key is lack of chemicals, heat and manipulation. Once dreads and braids and twists are done the hair is left to grow. Add some water and a lil oil every now and again and it grows like crazy with little breakage.
This

That is why when men grow our hair out most don’t run into length problems because we aren’t tempted to mess with it like women do.

Not bashing women but messing with your hair is common among women and that fukks up your hair growth.

Main reason why locs are long because there is minimal messing with the hair when growing locs so you won’t be tempted to mess with it.

Funny thing is hair protection is a balance, it needs just as much air and sunlight as it does "protection"
I always assumed "protective styles" had no scientific validity for hair care, and was just a popular excuse to wear faux hair and wigs.
Reminds me of the "bro-science" beliefs about pillow-erosion of hairlines, or thinking that petrolatum can cause hair loss. None of it is proven, but its an easy way to market a specific product.
