There’s been a lot of revisionist history when it comes to the dunk contest

Most people criticism about the ASG and the modern product are rooted in nostalgia. People only remember the highlights and the good moments. The ASG and Dunk contest was never great every year. :hubie:

Another thing is the media and former players have spent the last 15 years tearing down the modern product and its players. So it was only natural that the fans did the same thing. The media spent years saying only rings matter now they get mad when players move accordingly.

Idiots wanna blame Bron for everything cause he’s an easy scapegoat. People need to stop comparing everything to Kobe and Jordan. Let the game move beyond them. What’s the point of doing the dunk contest when people are just gonna say someone from the past did it better?

I always remembered All-Star games as a kid as the games where they decided to play defense maybe a couple times in the entire half.

My uncle would always better over in the over/under every year. The 88’ one in Chicago went over with about 5 seconds left in the game.

The slam dunk contests were fun and had more star names, but they were repetitive. There’s only so many dunks someone can do, and they would have 3 rounds. So you would see the same dunks a lot.

Nique was in about 5 contests, so you saw him do the windmills (one handed and two handed) so many times. Same with the two handed reverse dunk. MJ pretty much did the same dunks in the 3 contests he was in. He would add a little more style to the FT line dunks each year though, and I don’t think he had the kiss the rim dunk the first time.

Ja and Zion should have been in it, commissioner and the brands behind them NIKE and Jordan should have made the push for them, but since they still selling they don't care. The game needs it next American superstars to take over once Bron/Curry/ Durant retire. its going to be cold once them dudes is gone.

Honestly I can’t recall that many competitive dunk contest in the 90’s aside from Shawn Kemp and Dee Brown. The two that Harold Miner won, I don’t recall being that competitive. The Cedric Ceballos one..?, JR Rider East Bay one, don’t recall if he won that competing with Baby Jordan or not. The Brent Barry one and Kobe one were mediocre at least, then it was cancelled in 98 for Two-ball, then the lockout the year after.

The Cedric Ceballos one in 92’ was shyt. The best dunks were from Larry Johnson, but he missed his dunks in the finals. Shawn Kemp missed his dunks in the first round and got eliminated.

The Harold Miner wins were not good contests. Miner wasn’t in the one Isaiah Rider won. They both appeared the next year when Miner won again.

91’ with Dee Brown and Shawn Kemp was by far and away the best of the 90s contests. Rex Chapman had some good dunks in that one too.

Explain the rationale. Lebron is a "scared of competition" so he avoided the dunk contest. Wade, KD, Derrick Rose, Westbrook skipped it....becuz they want to be like Bron??
I know in regards to Wade, he recently said on his podcast he was never asked.

Stars(celebrity) ≠ All Stars

People barely know the players participating now which affects crowd engagement.

You can say those guys weren’t “all stars” but they were highly popular stars when they were in the contest. Not there no name nikkas that probably won’t EVER be stars :stopitslime:

In real time the dubk contest used to be a big deal. Now nobody cares anymore

They should bush it completely
:camby:
Or have it every three years and hope “stars” would want to compete. These players are too scared and want to protect their “brand”. Plus, how many variations of dunks are out there? The professional dunkers are better anyway.
:umad:
Dunk contests were cool before the internet. With the advent of the internet and social media, we have access to the greatest dunks at all times. Having Zion, Ja, Zach and Gordon go at it would be the only thing that would be cool. Other than that…
:camby:
Bring the pros out or have “stars” only. Do it every other year or every third year.

Another thing people fail to realize, there are a younger generation of fans who might enjoy not only the dunk contest, but the ASG. Older people like us who have been watching for a long time might see it as regression, but the younger kids might genuinely be entertained.
