There’s been a lot of revisionist history when it comes to the dunk contest

Most people criticism about the ASG and the modern product are rooted in nostalgia. People only remember the highlights and the good moments. The ASG and Dunk contest was never great every year. :hubie:

Another thing is the media and former players have spent the last 15 years tearing down the modern product and its players. So it was only natural that the fans did the same thing. The media spent years saying only rings matter now they get mad when players move accordingly.

Idiots wanna blame Bron for everything cause he’s an easy scapegoat. People need to stop comparing everything to Kobe and Jordan. Let the game move beyond them. What’s the point of doing the dunk contest when people are just gonna say someone from the past did it better?
Highkeys the 2010s had more good dunk contests than the 90s and 2000s lmao

NO BRON WOULD HAVE GOTTEN
MORE STARS TO COME OUT
GOING FORWARD.

ONCE HE GAVE THE OK FOR
YOUNG STARS NOT TO COMPETE
THEY ALL FOLLOWED SUIT.

DUDES LIKE JRICH, DESMOND MASON, DWIGHT, BLAKE, WALL, OLADIPO, ZACH/GORDON HELD IT DOWN OVER THE YEARS
SO IM NOT SURE WHY PPL ARE
PRETENDING FANS SHOULDNT COMPLAIN
ABOUT SEEING G LEAGUERS AND BUMS
IN THE CONTEST.

Blame Derrick Rose too then

A big reason the Vince Carter dunk contest stood out was because it had been trash for a solid decade (didn't even do it in 98) and he reinvigorated it.
Then it went back to being meh the following year, then the year after that was the spinning wheel nonsense (J-Rich first dunk contest). But the J-Rich and Mason contest from 03’ was pretty competitive and good.

NO ONE COMPLAINED ABOUT
THE LAVINE/GORDON CONTESTS.

NOR WALL, OLADIPO, DERRICK JONES
ROBBING GORDON ETC.

And again, just like I said about the Vince Carter shyt, a big reason why people liked the Lavine/Gordon contest was BECAUSE of previous years being terrible. Don't try to rewrite this shyt, we were all here in real time seeing people complain about the lack of stars, overuse of props, and fan voting in 2012, complaining about the lack of stars and good dunks in 2013 and 14, etc. Lavine and Gordon was like "Oh hey they finally got a good one" and then it went right back to being trash. This has how it's been since the 90s. Years of mostly bad contests, with a few good ones in between. Why the fukk else was Magic Johnson saying "The duink contest is BACK!" every year.

Y'all got horrible ass memories man :mjlol: Trippy as fukk seeing shyt I saw being complained about in real time now being romanticized lmaoooo. When Jeremy Evans won in 2012 people were declaring the dunk contest dead. And 2013 was seen as just aight and people were clowning James White for not even being able to dribble

WHAT PART ARE YOU
NOT UNDERSTANDING ABOUT BRON
GAVE THE YOUNG STARS THE OK?

Explain the rationale. Lebron is a "scared of competition" so he avoided the dunk contest. Wade, KD, Derrick Rose, Westbrook skipped it....becuz they want to be like Bron??

Biggest issue is expectations. People expect nikkas to defy gravity now. nikkas miss so much because they tryna do impossible shyt. Conversely MJ won doing a FT line dunk...a decade after Dr. J did it. Dominique just did different variations of a windmill over and over. And people ate it up. Now people are more invested in shytting on it.

Honestly I can’t recall that many competitive dunk contest in the 90’s aside from Shawn Kemp and Dee Brown. The two that Harold Miner won, I don’t recall being that competitive. The Cedric Ceballos one..?, JR Rider East Bay one, don’t recall if he won that competing with Baby Jordan or not. The Brent Barry one and Kobe one were mediocre at least, then it was cancelled in 98 for Two-ball, then the lockout the year after.

A big problem is this player archetype has generally gotten phased out of today's game in general. Zach and J Rich the only two who can shoot forreal on that list. Who could you even comp to a Desmond Mason today? That slasher above-the-rim 2 guard type isn't even in the league like that anymore.

All this talk about players we would like to see, most of them don't actually fit the mold of the dunkers that gave us classics.
