There's never been a sustained period where young, American actors were "on." They've always been late bloomers.

Aside from the New Hollywood era, it's always been 35+ actors getting the best roles.

I think it has alot to do with schooling and the amount of time British and Australian actors are working on their craft. I read an article awhile back highlighting how rigorous British acting schools were in training students and how the schooling over there is alot cheaper than acting schools in the states. When you consider that most British actors have played a variety of roles before they even hit American shores, it starts to make sense a little bit.
