In the latest edition of Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer spoke about the recent RAW rating, which was up this week. He noted that there was a “big increase” in the teenagers, particularly over the second and third hours of the program, as well as a smaller increase in the 18-34 demo. The gains in the second hour are particularly of note, as that hasn’t happened in a long time. The rating dropped in the third hour, but the drop was likely the lowest of the year.

Meltzer noted that WWE is attempting to win back the teenage demographic with more risque programming, particularly in light of the launch of AEW. This included things like Corey Graves saying “holy shyt” on RAW and Kofi Kingston giving Samoa Joe the finger on Smackdown. WWE is reportedly “very aware” that they have lost touch with teenagers and they are “afraid are losing the teenagers.” This is a direction that WWE felt they “had to go” in.

This will also reportedly result in more NXT call-ups, in order to get younger wrestlers on the main roster.

This should've been their goal from the start. You start with the PG stuff with the children audience and you gradually mature up with them. I thought they did that with my audience growing up going from tail end of Rock-N-Wrestling, to the New Generation to the Attitude Era. I guess I gave them too much credit :mjlol:

It's weird that they're just now figuring out that they can't lose an entire generation of their audience but idk, maybe they thought the combination of kids/older, loyal fans would be enough to offset any decrease in their teen demo and now they see that isn't working. Regardless, I don't doubt that they are making an effort to pull in Gen Z. Wrestling is generational niche programming and if they lose a significant chunk of this current generation that's going to make cultivating new, loyal viewers/consumers even more difficult for them than it is currently.

I am curious how they plan to actually retain a teen demographic if they can lure them in. Many a CW/MTV show has found out the hard way that getting teens to tune in isn't the issue. Getting them to stick around is, especially if they start feeling like the show quality is declining. And for live tv in particular if they want to cultivate a teen audience they are going to have to get a lot better at connecting with current pop culture and riding relevant waves. No 16 year old is gonna make it a point to pause their Netflix binge watching for a live tv show they don't find relatable. But if they're serious about this, WWE also needs to start courting them on social media, especially on platforms like IG and Youtube.

Think of all the opportunities they've had over the last 8 years to do something even the last 3 when it was clear Cena was phasing his way out to be more mainstream[/QUOTE]
