:what: Who ever said that Lewis' death was comparable to King or Evers? Did I miss the Reggie Lewis holiday or the college named in his honor? This is a sports message board. Is the death of an athlete in his prime not a noteworthy topic to discuss in this forum?

Who said it it wasn't a noteworthy topic? My whole contribution to the thread started when a poster said that the death of a young athlete it sad. My response was that the death of a young anybody is sad, why should the fact that they were good at a sport have any bearing on that?

Most people are touched by the deaths of people that they know or know of. Of course it's sad for anybody to die but a person you know or know of is gonna touch you more so than the death of a complete stranger. Nobody is making Lewis or Bias or Benji or any other athlete who dies out to be martyrs but as a fan of sports and a black man it's gonna touch you in a certain way. But once again I am not seeing monument erected in their honor or anything so I'm really not seeing what your issue is.

I don't have an issue at all, Someone quoted me and I was trying to explain my point. No beef over here, B, just a discussion :manny:

YALL DONT KNOW THE REAL STORY? A DOCTOR KILLED REGGIE LEWIS.... REGGIE WAS DECLARED INELIGIBLE TO PLAY FOR THE REMAINDER OF HIS LIFE BY A SUPER-TEAM OF 12 HEARTSPECIALIST DCOTORS WHEN HE COLLAPSED THE FIRST TIME. THEY SAID HE HAD A DEADLY HEART CONDITION AND THAT HIM GOING BACK OUT AND PLAYING WOULD BE A MAJOR RISK. THEN HE WENT TO SOME BOSTON CLINIC FOR A SECOND OPINION AND THIS MUTHfukkA DR. GILBERT MUDGE TOLD HIM THERE WAS NO EVIDENCE OF ANY CONDITION AND THAT REGGIE COULD CONTINUE LIVING A NORMAL LIFE. HE TOOK HIS ADVICE, WENT BACK TO PLAYIN AND DIED IN PRACTICE A MONTH LATER.. HERE'S AN EERIE ARTICLE FROM BEFORE HIS DEATH

If Lewis is in the clear, then why is there so much gray in picture? PRO BASKETBALL - Baltimore Sun

^^THERES A FEW LIKE THIS ONE OUT THERE, WITH PEOPLE QUESTIONING MUDGE FOR RISKIN LEWIS' LIFE PRIOR TO HIS DEATH, SOME EVEN OUTRAGED.

I answered that in the post you quoted.

It's really that simple. If you follow sports the death of an athlete is gonna be more jarring than the death of someone who's name you don't even know. Millions of people die every year, do you observe all of these deaths the same? Of course not. You, like most people, observe the death of people that you know of more intensely than you observe the death of people you have never heard of.

RIP to Lewis, but dude is Loul Deng status. Good, but not a franchise player. He ain't carrying a franchise to a Championship. Bias was a great athlete, but you never know how they turn out in the NBA. Celtics missed out when they lost the Duncan sweepstakes.

RUDY GAY WAS A NICE COMPARISON, BUT I DO THINK REGGIE WAS A LIL MORE GIFTED ON OFFENSE.

speaking of that 4 block against jordan game, i forgot how good that celtics team was to start that season. 31-4, then injuries and age i guess got to them. 25-22 over the final 47 games. would have been a great series if a healthy celtics team met the bulls in the playoffs.

Because his life and career was cut down in its prime, you can forget just how great an offensive player Reggie Lewis was. The Celtics swingman averaged 20.8 points a game the final two years of his career.

Joe Dumars didn’t forget.

The now Pistons GM sat down with Zach Lowe of Grantland for a Q&A, mostly to talk about Detroit’s offseason (more coming on that in a future post), but Zach ended it with a great fan question:

Who was the toughest guy Dumars ever had to guard not named Michael Jordan?

…it was Reggie Lewis for me. He was long, athletic, smooth, he could raise up over you and shoot. He was a really good defender, too. He was a tough, tough cover. Man, he was a tough guy to guard. He was definitely the one, other than MJ, who was the toughest for me to figure out. He was so long, and you couldn’t really get physical with him, because he was so slim, and it always seemed like I was getting called for fouls. He was a great, great player.

Lewis died at age 27 of a heart condition, at the peak of his career. If you didn’t know about him, you should read the fantastic piece Jackie MacMullan did at ESPN about him recently.
And you can watch this.

:comeon:

His offensive skill set was real nice...Its kind of an insult to compare him to Deng

It's a shame that the Celtics lost Bias and Lewis within seven years of each other. Those two could have been similar to Jordan and Pippen on the wing and the Celtics probably would have never went through their down period in the 90's.
:ohhh:
