Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Belarus and other major Soviet republics wanted to continue the USSR until the attempted coup of 1991. The majority of their populations in a free vote, the first time in Soviet history, wanted to continue the USSR.

Russia will probably always have a role to play in Eurasia - whether it is the Russian Empire, the Soviet Union or the Russian Federation.

However, unlike say 1917, Russia has thousands of nukes. What is the Western goal? It certainly should not be the disintegration of Russia or a new Russian civil war.

At this point after months of watching the most incompetent war effort of a major power since the Vietnam war, I wouldn't be stunned if they can't even launch nukes.

Their entire image got exposed. They're a regional power, not a superpower.
