A win is a win. But the team looked sloppy. Norm needs to be better he was pressing too much. Looking at the next 7 games only ones I'm expecting to wins in are the OKC (wouldn't be surprised if they split) the others are crapshoots.
This team has been too inconsistent in the past so until they prove otherwise that's what I'm expecting. Always happy to see them best the Lakers tho.
Here's a recap of first game from maybe the best person that covers team:
2022-23 Regular Season, Game 1: Five Takeaways
Well, the regular season is actually here now. And the LA Clippers and Los Angeles Lakers took to the court on Thursday night in Los Angeles each in search of their first victory of the season. But for the Clippers, they hadn’t played yet. The Lakers, on the other hand, were fresh off a beatdown at the hands of the defending champion Golden State Warriors.
This was a “nasty game” as Clippers coach Tyronn Lue put so succinctly during his postgame presser. The Clippers appeared to be the better team for long stretches, but sloppy play and poor free throw shooting doomed them to the possibility of a loss. In the end, the Clippers prevailed 103-97 over their cross-hall rivals.
1.) KAWHI LEONARD, SIXTH MAN OF THE YEAR?
In what was a stunning development hours before the beginning of tonight’s game, it was
reported by Yahoo’s Chris Haynes that Kawhi Leonard was being considered to come off the bench. It seemed almost impossible to believe. And yet, when Lue named his starters during pregame, Leonard was absent from the starting five. It meant tonight was Leonard’s first game off the bench since Nov. 10, 2013.
Leonard played 21 minutes, finishing with 14 points, 7 rebounds, 2 assists and 1 steal on 6 of 12 shooting. The two-time Finals MVP struggled in his first stint, which didn’t come until the midway mark of the second quarter. But Leonard started the third quarter before coming out midway through the frame and ultimately coming back in for the final time during the game’s last eight minutes. It was an interesting night to say the least. But Leonard as a bench player seems to be here until he ramps all the way up with his workload.
2.) JOHN WALL’S HELPFUL DEBUT
It wasn’t just Leonard who was coming off a long hiatus this evening, at least officially. Tonight marked John Wall’s first NBA regular season game since Apr. 23, 2021. That night he played
against the Clippers. He was with them tonight, though. And, boy, was he ever
with them. Wall finished with 15 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists and 1 steal in 25 minutes. The guard made 7 of his 15 field goal tries.
Wall took advantage of what the Lakers’ defense ultimately gave him, going 4 of 6 in the mid-range against defenders who were going under nearly every screen that the Clippers set for Wall. The veteran missed all 4 of his 3-point attempts, but you can live with that if he’s doing other things. After the game, Wall was critical of himself, saying he was “pissed” at his turnovers and “irked” that he missed Luke Kennard several times when Kennard was open. For the first night, though, Wall was everything the Clippers could have hoped for.
3.) IVICA ZUBAC’S CAREER BEST NIGHT
The star of the night, if you can believe it, was none other than Ivica Zubac. The 25-year-old center finished with 14 points, a career high 17 rebounds and 5 blocks in his 35 minutes. It marked the 12th time in Zubac’s career that he’s played at least 35 minutes, with 10 of those coming under the guidance of Lue. The other two instances were when Zubac was still with the Lakers.
Zubac controlled everything in this game. He was the player who stole the show every time you glanced at the court. It was probably the single best two-way outing of his career with all things considered. If Zubac takes a leap this season — and if his play in EuroBasket and
the way Lue and Wall have talked about him are any indication, it looks like it could be coming — then the team’s ceiling might dramatically rise. He was that good against his former team.
4.) LUKE KENNARD, SCREENER EXTRAORDINAIRE
Since joining the Clippers, Luke Kennard has basically haunted the Lakers at every turn. Coming into tonight, Kennard was averaging 11.2 points on 56.4% shooting against the Lakers as a member of the Clippers, and that includes connecting on 20 of his 37 3-point tries (54.1%). This evening, Kennard finished with 11 points, making 4 of his 6 shots overall (66.7%) and all 3 of his triple tries.
One of the ways that Lue has opted to unleash Kennard against the Lakers is by using him as a screener in their small-small pick-and-rolls. The reason is because he’s so good at it and understands when to slip or ghost or flare the screen and the angles required for the passer to get him the ball. It killed the Lakers last season and it hurt them yet again tonight. Lue has constantly made Kennard the X-Factor and each time he delivers in this setting. It also doesn’t hurt that
they’ve talked up his defense and overall importance lately.
5.) TY LUE CONTINUES DOMINANCE OVER LAKERS
This result moved Tyronn Lue to 8-0 against the Lakers since taking over as head coach of the Clippers. Is that at all meaningful? Probably not. But it does say how motivated Lue has kept the team over what is now a third season in charge, especially when accounting for how many lineups Lue has had to roll out there due to injuries, COVID protocols, etc. It speaks to his calming presence.
Lue has figured out ways to neutralize LeBron James, as well, and it’s not always on the defensive end. Lue makes James work in ways other teams and coaches usually don’t, always making sure James is involved in nearly every action and not allowed to take a single possession off. It’s worn James down in nearly every game they’ve gone against one another. Lue has the trend down. We’ll see how much longer it lasts. At some point the Lakers have to get one. Right?
Right?
