The south didn't "take over" hip hop until about 2006. As of now, no region in particular runs rap, but besides J.Cole, Future & Young Thug none of the hottest artist in rap come from the south.
I actually live in the south now and southern artist are nowhere near as big as they were when I first moved here.

I think that the fact that NYC (one city in one state) is considered a region and is held to the same standard as The South (multiple states, multiple cities) is all the proof you need that the level of greatness and expectation is different.

People say "The South" and compare it to NYC like the south is one place. nikkas be from Memphis, Atlanta, NOLA, H-Town and everywhere else and say "NYC fell off".

There's been time when ATL, NOLA, MEMPHIS etc has fallen off too but no one notices it because it's all "The South".

When one city is thrown up against multiple cities and held to that same standard. It becomes clear that that one city is a big deal.

NY is the only place in hip hop where people will purposely hate on another culture and then have the nerve to turn around and bite shyt. Rocafella: Rappers - Jay Z, Memphis Bleek, State Property, Dipset, Kanye West, MOP.
Producers - mainly Just Blaze, Bink, Kanye West.

D Block: Rappers - The Lox, Jae Hood, 357.
Producers - Vinny Idol, Poobs, Liveson, Swizz Beatz.

G Unit: Rappers - 50 Cent, Lloyd Banks, Tony Yayo, Young Buck, The Game.

All of these Artists and producers are very East Coast based and oriented. Name the southern counterparts that came before them. Name the southern styles they jacked.
