Valve gets this right and many other companies will try to follow.
I mean I have given some great thought to this, what exactly is needed to build a solid platform? The main things to get down is the motherboard, it has to be a fairly new chipset at the start to keep it all moving, then have a platform that can easily be upgraded. I don't think upgrading a traditional CPU is for the faint of heart as bending one pin can destroy a $200-$300 processor immediately.
