$183 million dollars is a whole hell of a lot easier to procure than the billions, and probably trillions that proper reparations would require. Not to mention the difficulty of getting it in this racist country, how it would be distributed and all manner of logistics. I believe in reparations because i believe that would be the just recompense for what slavery has done, and continues to do to black people in this country, but I'm also not blind to the herculean task it would take to achieve. It's an apples and oranges comparison to this scenario.
It’s not apples to oranges, it’s apples to apples. This is not a case of reparations. All they did was do the research to find out if there are unrecovered Jewish assets that were stolen during the holocaust (which I personally don’t believe is where the money came from). They could provide the exact same service for black Americans.

Who paid for the research?
The State of NY. The Department of Financial Services has been allocated a budget of $521 million for 2023-2024. Any insurance claims or claims to stolen art, from 70+ years ago, requires major research and legal work. It ain't cheap. I'd love to see a breakdown of the legal cost for proving provenance and ownership of artwork from 70+ years ago when its sitting in some museum or wealthy person's home in Europe. No one is willingly giving back those assets without a fight in court. Or the the legal fees required to make an insurance company pay a 70+ year old claim when the insurance company has probably changed hands several times, and lost records.

Don't even have to go that far back to when we had internment camps and seizure of assets for the japanese, but they decided to fund something that we had no part of.

"It was created to help Holocaust victims and their heirs recover assets deposited in banks; unpaid proceeds of insurance policies issued by European insurers; and artworks that were lost, looted, or sold under duress. The HCPO does not charge claimants for its services. Since its inception, the HCPO has responded to thousands of inquiries and received claims from all 50 U.S. states and 53 countries.

Under the direction of Superintendent Harris, HCPO has announced the resolution of Nazi Looted Art Claims for four paintings and ten 18th Century Chasubles from the Collection of Johann Bloch, completed the first joint recovery with the Carabinieri for the Protection of Cultural Heritage, and alongside the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation (SPK), returned three paintings to the heirs of Dr. Ismar Littmann. For more information, visit the HCPO website."

I dont know how many slaves had insurance policies, bank accounts or high value artworks....

Yall need to read the details... this shyt was way simpler than government deciding payments for ADOS
She chose those words. That’s her bad messaging.
