Chris was supposed to get the business. It's his wife's cousin and the guy he looked up to's son. He says numerous times that his plan is to fall back, only give orders to Chrissy, and have him handle everything because he's family. Besides Junior, the only family he's got in the mob.
He WANTED Chris to win. He wanted to trust him. So he kept taking more chances and giving him more rope. In the end, once he saw Chris was about to get that charge and was high driving, almost killed him too, and the feds was watching, he had to dead him.
When Tony saw the car seat he realized Chris was probably never going to get 100% clean. Remember Tony has a strong love for animals and babies. Chris disappointed him, but the car seat was what pushed Tony over the edge.
That was a convenient excuse to himself and the audience to Wack Chris.
Tony had been done with Chris since Carmella pointed out that Clever was a revenge fantasy for Chris. This was right after Chris fukked that real estate agent Tony was pursuing. That had to be tremendous blow to Tony’s already inflated ego. I also believe Chris wanted to get busted for both incidents as a payback for all the years of emotional and physical abuse at the hands of his Uncle.
The prolonged hug during the baptism was both accepting and saying farewell to the love they once shared.
Tony was fukked up that he didn't hit the real estate agent and Chris did.
