Are Cartels more powerful in their operations in the US than the Mob is?
Hard to say, but likely Cartels are more powerful, they're more violent, have hundres of thousands of gang members ready to do dirt...however, Cartels operate here much more silently than they do in mexico, I think there's a ban on killing in the US... Also the cartel is likely in just about every major city in the US selling dope to US gangs. So in the US they're mostly doing wholesale drug operations, laundering money, and buying real estate.
The mob these days is in NYC, NJ, Philly, Florida, and in Chicago, Detroit, KC and maaaaaybe some spots are still active like Cleveland, Milwaukee, Pittsburgh.
In NYC I'd say the Five Families are likely the most powerful, wealthy and connected criminal organization. But in Chicago, the mob is like 95% legit, they control industries (construction like the one fukking scaffolding company that gets all the scaffolding jobs anytime there's construction in the city, wholesale food distribution, legal casinos, etc.). Cartel is definetly more powerful in Chicago due to the latin gang connections.
Overall I'd give the edge to the cartels due to the money they're making wholeselling dope. But Mob & Cartels work together more than they'd every beef w/ one another...And mostly they operate in different segments. Mob is more about union corruption, racketeering (corrupt business enterprises), gambling and loan sharking and the cartel at least in the US is mostly drugs and human trafficking.
Internationally the italian mafias, the albanians and cartels and/or south americans work together with one another...Chinese triads and russians are known to be the most sophisticated money launderers too. They don't care about who is more powerful b/c they each do things the others need so they all work together to make money.
EDIT:
If I'm not mistaken, FBI has stated that it considers the American Mafia to be the most powerful and influential within the US
