Ukraine is close to becoming a full member of NATO and Russia claims that violates an agreement between the West and Soviet Union that Russia’s border neighbors wouldn’t join a regional Western military bloc. Russia believes Ukraine becoming a NATO member would make them more vulnerable to getting attacked.

As much as China and the west are economic rivals, they still have trade relations with each other, because they understand how beneficial it is for each other. Russia can't flourish off of just access to the Chinese economy while being completely shut off from the West. Look at the difference between North Korea and South Korea. It's not going to be as drastic as North Korea, because North Korea has way less natural resources than Russia, but just betting on China funding your economy is a bad look and threatens any sense of autonomy. You're basically China's fleshlight at that point. This is short-sighted ego trip that will fukk Russia tremendously long-term.

It's clear Putin is kamikaze right now, but I can't imagine why he would do this if he didn't have a true ace up his sleeve. To occupy Ukraine is going to take money and resources he is no longer going to have. Europe will pivot to Saudi Arabia, western economies will be fukked for the next few years, but this has the ability to fracture Russia if their economy collapses due to an ill-advised offensive.

There are no other aces for him to play.
