While I take most of what Western governments say with a grain of salt, particularly the French - I've also watched "attack on jihadis" used almost exclusively as a cover-up story for the slaughter of civilians.

There is some truth to that and it is terrible when it happens, but then again the jihadist hide amongst regular people in regular villages in order to conceal themselves. It is just like what is happening in the Ukraine right now. Ukraine soldiers are wearing civilian clothing while living and fighting among the regular Ukrainian citizen. The Russians kill up several hundred people many of which were Ukraine soldiers, but the West does not tell that part of the story. They just pretend that everybody killed by the Russians were unarmed civilians. Well common sense tells you that is not completely true.

Malian soldiers are literally dying on the battlefield to defend their homeland.
