Lol Russia basically did colonize nations through the USSR and participated in proxy wars like US did throughout the cold war. The leader of North Korea asked Stalin for his support before he started his takeover of the Korean peninsula. There were barely any US troops stationed in Korea at the time.

Russia is not a victim and has as much blood on its hands as does the US. It plays the game of geopolitics like everyone else. Dont revise history

I think one of the areas is extremely rich with coal resources and also there are parts of the coast they probably want port access to (a resource that Russia has put a high priority on for the past century). The goal is for Russia to be self-sufficient enough that things like sanctions mean nothing.
