Haven't been stationed there for a month and don't have a month's supply of food and gas.

That’s the one of the many shytty moving parts of an invasion. Either you move fast or carry everything with you.

Once you breach it’s ideal to set up small bases that can be easily staged then moved later. These are little hubs that provide fuel. food, etc. they also have to be in a somewhat defendable place. If you don’t coordinate this stuff correctly then you run into issue like this. There’s always the possibility of mechanical failure and such. Again it’s ideal for forward support units, following up behind the main assault forces, to pick up these stragglers. To be honest there were plenty of Soldiers and Marines stuck with broken down vehicles until another unit could tow or repair their shyt during the invasion of Iraq lol.
