I don't believe this to be true but I do seriously hope there is a sane middleman somewhere in their chain of command who could refuse to launch nukes if Putin ordered it .

Hopefully even his own soldiers would realize how stupid that would be if the time came

I mean...we've been on borrowed time since these weapons were developed. There's a compelling theory that we don't have contact with alien life because species develop weapons that end their worlds before they develop the technology for long distance space travel. The great filter.

Are you talking about the fallout from the nuclear missiles or the ability to stop a missile in general?

Of course there's no way to stop the results of a nuclear explosion... but it can be lessened by forcing a detonation further away from the target. Saves people in the target area but fukks everybody else

I'm talking about an attack. You might get lucky and stop 1 missile by detonating another one close to it, but you're not stopping the hundreds that would come were Russia to actually strike. Nuclear war would involve a high volume strike because destruction of the party has to be assured even before the launch. This is so known that it's actually helped avoid disaster:

Soon after, it reported that five missiles had been launched. Russia would not be concerned with fallout in American cities. These aren't meant to be precision strikes as much as they are to inflict mass casualties. Shooting a missile high into the atmosphere with a steep decline angle also reduces the amount of time that defense systems have to locate the missile, assess its trajectory, and try to shoot it down. Imagine this happening with hundreds of missiles, with many missiles carrying pods that could target New York City, Boston, Philadelphia, etc. out of one missile. There's no stopping that.
