Its crazy if you go to Nigeria nowadays, most young people will respond in English to Igbo.

I personally have been relearning Igbo on my own with books and classes because my parents failed us :yeshrug:
They thought that we would have a better chance to get ahead if they only spoke English to us when we came to America. So they only spoke Igbo to each other and English to us.

Its funny because I can remember my older siblings and I speaking Igbo as late as when I was 5 years old. My sister doesn't even remember Igbo at all.

Man... you can completely forgot an entire language if you dont use it.

Same. Re-learning Igbo is one of my life long goals.

So why does it seem that Yoruba is still spoken in the diaspora? What is the difference in attitudes towards Yoruba vs Igbo

And why did your parents (or any Igbo parents) not want to teach their kids Igbo?

And yeah you can def forget a language

Yorubas are very proud of their culture and history.

I think Igbos felt defeated after the Biafran War and thought forgetting their language was a way to survive and thrive. I've met Igbos in Nigeria who cannot speak their language.

Yoruba people are more disciplined than us :lolbron:

But it wasn't so much that my parents did not want us to learn Igbo, it was more that they wanted us to be very Americanized because they felt that they were denied too many opportunities due to the fact that people could tell they were African off the jump.
Some even told their children to answer more "English" names in order to blend in more.

It was a different generation though. Back when we came to America, you could tell a Nigerian event was going on by the number of Taxi Cabs at an area because most Nigerians 25+ years ago were cab drivers.
Nowadays everyone is Dr. this, Lawyer that, and they all drive Benz.

So back then it was presumed that the best thing you could do for your children was make sure they got all the benefits of being American by heavy assimilation.

Nowadays Nigerians wouldn't even think like this because there are many Igbos whoa re prospering despite their accents or first names

My church has igbo language services every 2nd Sunday night. It really helps my pronunciation and reading.

And yes I will teach them once I know it fully, that's one of my life goals just like MansaMusa
