The Rock was so big by the time he got out, McMahon chose him to face Hogan and Lesnar. Not Austin. So there was no "he couldn't have done it back then." He did. He carried every huge event he did during his prime with the exception of WM 15 and WM 17 which were both him and Austin as to the whys people bought the show.
