But he talked about an auto plant in his hometown, one that friends at his high school worked at. Obama spoke there during election season, said his policies would allow the plant to remain open for another 100 years. Ryan said that Obama's bailout failed and as a result, the plant closed.

The plant did close, but did so in December 2008, when Bush was still in office.

In recalling GM's decision to close the Janesville Assembly plant in his hometown, Ryan said Obama hoped to keep it open.

"Right there at that plant, candidate Obama said: 'I believe that if our government is there to support you, this plant will be here for another hundred years,'" Ryan said in his speech at the Republican National Convention in Tampa.

"That's what he said in 2008. Well, as it turned out, that plant didn't last another year. It is locked up and empty to this day. And that's how it is in so many towns today, where the recovery that was promised is nowhere in sight."

GM decided to close the factory in June 2008. Production stopped in December 2008. Obama took office in January 2009.
