There have been black thrillers before, but they don't get any play. Movies like Asunder, Eve's Bayou, Repentance haven't gotten any box office love. Some of this has to do with marketing and wide-release distribution though. I think if these type of movies got more play, black folks would go see them.

I've always hated how unintelligent and simplistic black movies have been. Other than spike lee back in the day, the majority of black movies have been bullshyt love stories, comedies, madea movies and thug movies.

The problem with black movies is that the majority pander to black women and the ones that don't are all about drugs, gangs, or prison.

Prepare for a rep... :wow:

This is exactly what I've been saying. The reason why I am loving this article is because it shows hard nosed Hollywood that blacks in fact do love other genres besides the cliche you listed. I know many blacks(even on here) who love Action, horror, thriller, anime, sci-fi and fantasy. But the media/Hollywood only thinks us blacks like the typical things you listed. I believe this is our final chance to prove them wrong.

I always felt like the wierdest part about the Madea movies were that southern white people LOVED Madea. It always had me like :leostare:.

I think black cinema can make a comeback but it needs to be done from a grassroots level from indie film makers. Also the bootleg industry has to go. We use to have so many black movies and they all did well in theaters until the bootleg man showed up and now hardly anyone wants to pay for a ticket anymore.:francis: We refuse to support black film makers and actors but we will hit up the bootleg man and get that 5 for 20. Damn shame! :wow: Now studios are hesitate to greenlight black films because they know it won't be financially successful. We iz our own worst enemy.:mjcry:

yep, it wouldnt be so bad if the bootleg didnt come out until the movie was on DVD.

But dudes at the barber shop have movies the day after they come out :heh:

Tyler Perry, and I dont like his work, did the imipossible by getting black folks to support him. And in turn made him a billionaire.

You know black folks aren't gonna bootleg anything about Jesus just like the person at Apollo amatuer night singing a gospel song NEVER got boo'd. :heh:

Why does the writer feel the need to sh!t on Tyler Perry in order to big up blacks in thrillers? Seems Tyler Perry's own people hate him the most. There's room for everybody.

Don't really know how I feel about No Good Deed because I haven't seen it yet, to be fair.

I did check out Repentance on Netflix the other day and while I think the film could've executed some elements better, it was ok overall. It was pretty much a suspense flick in the vein of Misery but it flirted with the horror genre to a degree.

It's refreshing to see considering blacks don't do well with horror films on a whole. We need more and better in this direction.
