Sadly Its because we're still not used to seeing ourselves depicted in certain ways yet. Simple as that. I saw the trailer during the game last night like most everybody else and I was taken aback because it was kinda strange seeing black faces depicted in a movie outside the normal stereotypes. It kinda reminds me of when an elder black person gets excited over seeing a young black person wearing a business suit or doctor uniform because its something he/she rarely sees. Its sad actually when you really think about it
Black people are still mainly used to seeing the same stereotypical images over and over again whether in audio or visual form. We're still used to seeing ourselves at the bottom. As inferior. The ghetto. The hood. Rachetness. The sidekick. The help. The rapper. The athlete. The slave. The convict. The thug.
In 2017, the Black Panther movie is a breath of fresh air because its something totally different than what we're used to seeing. Also, in 2017 this being a "breath of fresh" air is sad to me. Why is it that images of black people outside of stereotypes are damn near non-existent to the point we're allwhen we finally see something different?
The answer is that we don't control our own image and "media propaganda" is constantly being used to demonize / criminalize the black image:

The world is constantly being presented with the image the white man wants to be presented of the black man. This mainly effects how see feel about ourselves and each other. Constantly seeing ourselves represented in a stereotypical and negative light affects our collective self-esteem and we don't even know it. We don't know it because it affects the subconscious. Thats the power of media.
This isn't a thread to hate on the movie at all and I will go support it but as I was reading the thread about the trailer I felt different about it than the rest of you. I don't think most of you realize the big picture and exactly WHY you are so excited about this movie. Its because it represents a new image that you've never seen of yourself and culture and honestly I'm not too thrilled that we have such limited access to positive and heroic images of ourselves that we shyt our pants when we do see it. White people are used to seeing themselves portrayed as superheroes. They aren't awe struck when the newest film is released. Little white boys and girls have plenty of positive and heroic images of themselves. Its not surprising for them like it is for us. Its the norm.
Us seeing ourselves outside of the stereotypes HAS TO BECOME THE NORM. Movies like this has to be more frequent. More powerful and positive messages and images of ourselves are needed for the self-esteem of the youth. Young black kids already have the most limited "circumference of awareness" when it comes to having a wide variety of images of themselves. That has to change.

BP still has stereotypes...
In recent years Django Unchained, I think I love my wife, Dr. Who (always), Ghost Rider etc are examples of films with an acceptable level of typecasting and stereotyping. DU ONLY because of the Django character and his extreme self-agency (NOTE: racists do not like the film).
Examples in BP:
AAVE might seem normal in some parts but it is a stereotype.
Africans in isolated Wakanda talking about 'Swag'.
Not to mention that the marketing pre-movie has been a colonial- esque one of whites being the audience's proxy with a journey into the dark unknown - ala Tin tin, Tarzan, Asterix. Even in the real world NOT all African countries are Third World so not sure why the should be a primary (trailer) THEME in the imaginary marvel Universe - Economy of Gabon - Wikipedia . "Nomadic", "Under-developed" transmit the same idea without the notion of being "trapped in poverty".
Then there is the other contentious stuff in the trailers (which I will not go into here).
It is called damning someone with faint praise. It's like when someone tells you "you talk well for a black guy" or "you are pretty for a black girl".. There are (at least) two main messages in those types of statements. One positive, one not so much..
... and I haven't even seen the movie yet..
This doesn't mean that I don't see the film as a form of progress and it doesn't mean that i will not support it. We just need to keep things in perspective.
