It fell of cause NY doesnt support their own, cats support whats dope or poppin nationally.
So when rappers from all over the country started poppin, NY rappers were now competing with cats from all over the country even on a underground level, street level all that. While Georgia supports their rappers, even if they are wack as fukk cause they have special type of styles that only GA rappers use.

Besides that as far as cities go, I said it before but it's quite unfair in 2012 to compare a city of 8 million to a whole region with like 100-150 million people and more than 50% of the black people in the nation (the south). Compare the east coast to the south today and it's quite close, or NY vs any city.

The only reason is that the NY sound is dead...

Hip Hop is dictated by the beats, the region that makes the most attractive beats reigns...

NY can readily get back on top if they develop a newer and fresher sound...

Producers control hip hop...

Plus the music coming out the South is garbage. The South consist of 13 states and still hasn't produced more classics than Queens, NY.

They have very few good song writers coming from the South that can produced a song with a good concept and an interesting topic. It's mostly about how much money they got, how they pimping a whole bunch of biitches, and all the bricks they sell.

Its embarassing to listen to these rappers, because their music has no depth. I don't need substance or a message, that's why I can enjoy Redman, but I at least want something creative.

The music coming from the South is garbage.

NY stopped refreshing its sound. shyt became repetitive

You probably talking beats.

But The Runners, JUSTICE League, Harry Fraud, G.O.O.D. Music, Boi1da, 40 are all over the place.

Down south songs rarely have good concepts or interesting topics. Its the same shiit about money, pusssy, and crack. That's what you call refreshing?

Ny fell off because they hate EVERYTHING.
Besides 50 pretty much destroyed everybody relevant during his reign.

Def mean beats. Lyrics are on point but where NY used to come up with fresh sounds, from Wu-Tang to Jay-Z to Mobb Deep to DMX to 50, they stopped after that...

Everything in this thread is the truth. I don't think they hate everything like on poster suggested; I do think they aren't receptive at first to something else that's hot that WASN'T made from an NY artist but they come around....eventually

NY rappers are guilty of this as well. Every coast have artist who talk about the same thing and artist who are versatile.

NY rappers are not talented or relateable basically nowadays....when NY has really been hot typically its been hot by default....they wuz the hottest when they first came out bcuz they were the first really doing it,all hiphop media wuz based in NY and bias....but then Cali blew up and took over,Cali fell off and it went back to NY bcuz Cali wuz weak and blackballed, soon as the south gained steam they took it back from the east.....east coast has never been able to really take the game from anybody.

Main reason is they culture is unique and all they own,u gotta give em that.....but nikkas don't relate to it,that's "east coast shyt".....most of the country don't live a "east coast shyt" kinda lifestyle....Cali,Midwest,South are all pretty similar....soon as we got our own representation in hiphop there's really no need to listen to dudes that are too "east coast" we don't relate to it,rap is about sellin a lifestyle and or makin it relatable....NY rappers talk about the worst shyt they can think of as far as NY lifestyle is concerned lol, piss in the hallways, bytches settin u up in the telly, fiends in they building, buck fiftys....hardly anything makin the ny lifestyle sound good.....Stack Bundles wuz the last relateable nikka to me,and probaly bcuz he spent sum time away in Chicago.....if NY wanna say how different they culture is they need to just be happy bein relevant in NY only,or they gotta change they style up and get on what other regions been on,live how we livin...otherwise stfu....NY "sound" is the exact reason they won't become relevant, besides the current lack of talent

When did the vets ever put on for the newer artists? From the outside looking in it seems more like the new gen always muscled their way in. I don't recall LL, KRS, Rakim, or Chuck D passing the torch to anyone. Link?

NY fell off because it lost it's grip and control of what is popping in hip hop...there was a time where rap orthodoxy was dictated by why what heads in NY were feeling...which is somewhat of an aberration as far as black music in america goes...historically, black music has been dominated by regions other than NYC...for a while they had it on lock in hip hop, almost by default because that's where it was birthed and the rap media and other outlets that controlled perception were very NYC centric...but once the restraints were officially all the way off, and NYC rap sensibilities had to compete with those of black america at large on a equal footing...it was a wrap

edit: NotSoft said essentially the same thing
